Description

As dog trainers and machinists, these Micro Prong collars are made by dog people, for dog people. Each collar is assembled individually, by hand in the USA, using the same traditional tools and artisan process that made the Micro Prong a standard of professional trainers, canine competitors and loving pet owners worldwide.

Micro Prong collars were designed originally to fit small dogs, because the larger prongs on standard size collars were too far apart, causing both fit and effectiveness issues. A Micro collar is made up of miniature prongs with a much shorter distance between them than typical prong collars. The end result is a collar that is proportionally correct on a diminutive dog. A Micro stays up under the jaw and on the safe part of the neck where it should be, without slipping down. And it provides gentle, steady pressure when pulled against, eliminating the uneven, pointy feel of too few prongs on a small neck.

In addition to working brilliantly for small dogs, many canine enthusiasts and trainers have discovered the benefits of using a Micro collar with their medium and large size dogs as well. Micros are especially good for larger dogs with short, sleek coats, as standard sized collars tend to slip down on slippery fur. The Micro stays in place better on these dogs and, when links are added, the increased number of prongs provides a more even, custom fit.

The Original

For dogs 6-20 lbs.

This collar is a light-weight, all around Micro, and fits a large variety of small to medium sized breeds. Designed for dogs between 6 and 20 pounds, it features a strong split ring leash attachment. The Original Micro is best suited for most dogs. Add-on links may be purchased for dogs whose neck size exceeds 9". Examples of the size and strength of breeds who do well in Original Micros are Shiba Inus, Havanese, Whippets, Westies, Schnauzers, Springer Spaniels, Norwich Terriers, and Australian Shepherds, to name just a few.

The Duro

For dogs 20 lbs and over

This collar is the sturdiest Micro, and features our most durable components. Designed for dogs 20 pounds and larger, it can withstand heavier pulling than the other two styles. This collar also features a strong split ring leash attachment. Add-on links may be purchased for dogs whose neck size exceeds 9". Examples of breeds who do well in Duros are Beagles, Dobermans, French Bulldogs, Dalmations, Boxers, Cairn Terriers, Basset Hounds, Airedales, Australian Cattle Dogs, Staffordshire Terriers and Weimeraners, to name just a few.

The Ultra

For dogs under 6 lbs.

This collar is the tiniest, most delicate Micro. Designed for dogs who weigh less than 6 pounds, it has the same number of links but features more petite components than either the Original Micro or the Duro Micro. Both the leash attaching ring and chain are jewelry-grade and tiny in size, which reduces the weight of the collar and slippage on tiny necks. Examples of breeds who do well in Ultra Micros are Toy Fox Terriers, Chihuahuas, Japanese Chin, Brussels Griffon, Italian Greyhounds, Maltese, Miniature Pinschers, and Pomeranians, to name a few.

Leerburg recommends using a backup collar any time you are walking your dog with a prong collar. For more information on back up collars and why we recommend them check out some of our free streaming videos on the proper use of a prong collar as well as the prong collar leash.

It is recommended to NOT use these collars with a retractable (flexi) lead.

Advantages

  • Proportionally correct on a diminutive dog or large breed puppy. (Larger prongs on standard size collars are too far apart, causing both fit and effectiveness issues.)
  • Lightweight design means less bulk on the dog. (Micro prongs are just 1.75mm, compared to the standard 2.25mm of 'small' prong collars.)
  • Stays up under the jaw and on the safe part of the neck where it should be, without slipping down.
  • Provides gentle, steady pressure when pulled against, eliminating the uneven, pointy feel of too few prongs on a small neck.
  • Especially good for larger dogs with short, sleek coats, as standard sized collars tend to slip down on slippery fur.
  • Stays in place better on these dogs and, when links are added, the increased number of prongs provides a more even, custom fit.
  • Double O rings are sturdy, and allow handler to use one or both rings clipped together to the leash.
  • Made in the U.S.A. , with genuine Herm Sprenger chain and American stainless steel.
  • Now in Quick Release model!

Components

  • Micros are made of Type 304 Quarter Hard 100% American stainless steel. This is very strong steel alloy with a very high tensile strength and resistance to corrosion from climate, chemicals, and organic compounds.
  • The brushed metal, sporty look of our collars is the direct result of the artisan-style manufacturing with hand tools. (Bulk-made overseas prong collars are heated and undergo a drying process in large machines that results in high shine.)
  • Made in the U.S.A. , with genuine Herm Sprenger chain and American stainless steel.
  • Portion of sale proceeds benefits the Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife Karelian Bear Dog Team. These working dogs provide the only established program in the U.S. to resolve conflicts between humans and bears in a non-lethal manner. With the help of these dogs, problem bears are humanely captured and released back into the wilderness, instead of routinely euthanized.
  • Ours are the only Micro Prongs made by hand in the U.S.A. Kimberland Collars handcrafts each one in a small town in rural Washington State. The operations provide meaningful work for kids with mental and social challenges, who handle all the printing and stuffing of the packaging inserts.

Bought this product?

Thank you Leerburg for shipping my new duro micro prong collar so quickly! Our Cairn terrier, Pippin, six months, has been a handful for training loose lead walking. My husband accidentally ran over our original micro prong collar with his truck, and we tried everything, including a "no-pull" harness, until we could get a new prong collar. Our new duro micro collar arrived yesterday. We took Pippin for a walk this morning, and it was the most enjoyable walk ever! No pulling!! We have used a micro prong collar with every Cairn terrier we've had, and wouldn't train any other way!!! This product will work miracles for any Cairn "terror." Thanks again!
