When You Mark a Behavior and Your Timing is Not Perfect

Uploaded on November 12, 2018 • 5 min

Everyone who believes in reward-based training, like we do at Leerburg, uses markers. There is a saying that I (Ed) coined when I produced my first DVD on marker training back in 2008 which goes like, "Marker training is simple, but it is not easy."

In this video, you will see how important perfect timing is when we train with markers. You will see how quickly dogs form a mental image of exactly what they were doing at the moment they heard the mark, and our video demonstrates how our idea of what we marked was not our dog's idea of why he was marked/rewarded.

This video is taken directly from our Intermediate Dog Obedience DVD and Online Course.

Great reminder! Question: If we are glad they're giving us the behavior that we want but they're also adding an additional, how do we not reward that but also encourage them for doing the part that they got right?

Good examples and video. Marking behaviors means pay attention, be in the moment with your dog and training.
