Basic Dog Obedience

Length: 3 Hours, 49 Minutes, 10 Seconds • Released 10-20-2008

Rating: 4/5 Stars

The purpose of this Leerburg training video is teach you the art of dog training.

It's our goal to show you that dog training is not rocket science it's 100% common sense. There are no "Tricks or Secrets of the Trade." Dog training is is an art that you can learn if your willing to put your mind to it.

The best dog trainers know how to build a bond based on two way respect between the dog and the handler. These trainers know how to motivate a dog to want to learn. They understand how and when to apply distractions during training so they can show the dog that it must mind under all circumstances.

Our video will show you how to approach dog training. It will teach you how to break a task into small incremental training steps (or building blocks). Once the dogs has learned each of these small blocks we show how to put them back together again so the dog can easily perform the exercises.

I have been training dogs for over 45 years. In 1982 I released my first Obedience training VHS tape (a long time ago). Over the years I have redone this video 6 or 7 times. I continued to add information and refined our program to the point where it is the best dog training DVD on the market. The latest version was released in August 2006.

If I were you and I were considering spending many hours of time following the training recommendations of someone like myself I would want to fully understand that persons philosophy of dog training. I suggest that you take a minute right now and read the article I wrote on my philosophy on dog training.

There is an old saying, "Dogs know what you know and they know what you don't know." My dog training program and this web site can be your first step in the journey of showing your dog what you know.

The information in this video is designed to be watched again and again and again. There is more information here than you would get in any local 10 week obedience class.

While there is some great information in here like about marker training, and explanations about collars, leashes, toys, and how to use them. I believe some of its is outdated and is in much need of being updated. I am somewhat frustrated that I spent as much money as I did. Some of the clips using the prong collar I feel the dog did not understand what was being asked of him and I felt like the correction was applied too heavily. As a trainer it is my believe that lots of rewards should be given in the learning process and in the clips with the recall with the German Shepard and the clip with the Golden Retriever feeling comfortable enough to want to walk or stand or lay down they should have practiced more before applying the adverse.

From an amateur's point of view......
The recall exercise with Zen(?) was not a happy one - he was reluctant to come because the corrections were a bit too hard - not level 10, but certainly more than a ouch. I thought at the beginning you advised that corrections only be done once the dog KNOWS what is required of him/her? Surely that should apply to the recalls?

I purchased this DVDrecently, its good over all. But the DVDconfuses in the stand command. It hardly covers it. I had watched a clip on YouTube where Michael Ellis was doing a stand and it was different. I actually purchased this DVD to learn how to get a good stand like sports dogs. I would really appreciate if Leerburg could get back to me with this. But still its a good DVD.

Mr Frawley,

I enjoy your dogs. I also really like the tree idea for jumpy dogs. I work with a lot of women who buy these giant dogs for protection and they like to jump on them and everyone else. Even a very small person can use this technique effectively. It also limits the chances of redirected aggression. Hope you don't mind if I use it.

Thank you,
Motley and Jeau

EXCELLENT VIDEO!! Every dog owner should have this video. Even if you are a dog trainer already you should get it just for review. I've gotten 4 videos so far and look at them over and over again and it's always something that I missed the first time I watched it.

Great job Ed!!

FANTASTIC VIDEO! This video has blessed our family greatly with our Alpha Female Shepherd Shalom. We are amazed in how quickly our 4 mo old Shepherd has grown to be such a great dog thanks to applying Ed's advice. I have applied it and seen the results.
All dog owners should have his DVDs. Our family bought Pack Structure, Basic Obedience, Puppy 8 Weeks to..., How to raise a Working Puppy... they are full of great information and wisdom.

Thanks Ed and Staff!

It's a very well done video. I just used the on-demand streaming video, and I did not have any problem and started learning just after pay. A lot of information is provided in the DVD, very complete and additional tips to understand training obedience. As Ed Frawley recommends, I will use "Building Drive and Focus" as a complement for training.
