Product Description

Herm Sprenger Curogan prong collars imported from Germany.

Curogan is a copper-tin-alloy with a high copper portion and some additives which make the material strong - but without any nickel. Therefore these chains avoid a discoloration of fair haired dogs. Some dogs (less than 10%) do react on Curogan with a discoloration.

A further advantage of curogan is the fact that it is absolutely free of nickel. More often nickel is responsible for allergic reactions of sensitive dogs and causes of some skin rashes.

Herm Sprenger advises that the Curogan will NOT rust because it is a copper/tin alloy and does not contain any iron, and only iron can rust. Curogan will darken and tarnish when exposed to the outdoor environment.

The Herm Sprenger Company has been a leader in the dog training market with their high quality training products for many years. Herm Sprenger uses only the best materials and prides itself on their high standards. Leerburg is proud to carry a wide variety of Herm Sprenger collars.

Prong collars do not apply pressure to the dogs trachea, making them a safe alternative to a slip collar, and much safer than allowing your dog to pull into a flat collar which can cause permanent damage to the dogs wind pipe. Instead a prong collar tightens, creating a pinching sensation that is instantly released once the dog “yields to the leash” or stops pulling.

Leerburg strongly recommends using a backup collar any time you are using a prong collar is on your dog. For more information on back up collars and why we recommend them check out some of our free streaming videos on the proper use of a prong collar as well as the prong collar leash. We recommend Leerburg’s Dominant Dog Collar.

Prong collars should NOT be used with a retractable (flexi) lead.

I'd like to return this for smaller prongs. The one I received is for a bear. I have a 65 lb Dutchie (lol).

We recently purchased Curogan Herm Sprenger Prong Collar for our 3 yo GSD female( small size with extra links) from Leerburg and I wanted to write this review to hopefully help anyone else who may be in a similar situation to ours.
Our girl has always been very nervous out on a walk and quite dog reactive (not necessarily aggressive just a very explosive mix of nervs and excitement). We live in an area where unfortunately alot of people let their dogs off leash and don't control them, so in the past couple of years we've had many minor incidents and also a couple of bad ones where our girl has lunged defensively at the off leash dog suddenly coming at us, and as she is a very powerful dog twice this resulted in quite bad hand injuries when the leash has yanked through my hand (once tearing flesh and the other quite severe rope burn).
We had previously tried EVERYTHING to try to improve our walks; around 200 hours training, obedience courses and reactive dog groups, 1.5 years e-collar training (which was a brilliant tool in so many ways for obedience and off-leash training… but as soon as the leash went on, we just weren't able to achieve the same positive results). Our walks were just so incredibly stressful (for me and her both) we completely stopped for quite a few months, I just couldn’t deal with the difficultly level and constant fear of an incident or injury.
Then watching some Leerburg training videos over the Christmas break I thought it’s time to try a prong collar, but I honestly didn’t expect too much of a change in her behaviour as we had tried so many tools and training methods previously.
The collar arrived - I fitted it easily (along with our dominant dog collar as backup)... and then our lives completely changed!!
The instant we began our first walk in the new prong collar our girl walked calmly on a loose leash. I was beyond astounded!! We gradually worked up to walking up and down our street, then our neighbourhood.. and eventually our busy main street with other dog walkers – something I never thought would be possible! We never had to give any corrections, she just responded to gentle leash pressure and most amazingly she is now so relaxed and stress-free on walks (I’m not sure if this is due to my reduced stress now I feel more secure with her on leash)! Walks are such a daily pleasure now, something I had long given up on us being able to ever experience.
I was reluctant to use a prong collar for a long time, mostly because they just looked so full-on and I was afraid of a possibility of injury to our dog given her lunging behaviours. But our experience we have found it to be a very gentle tool that has enabled us to achieve gentle and calm behaviours and has dramatically improved the quality of our dog’s life now we are able to walk her regularly.
Apologies for such a long review, but hopefully this might help others who may be in the same boat we were –completely at wits ends, frustrated, sad and feeling hopeless.. We are incredibly grateful for this tool and for Leerburg for providing so many free training videos that helped us to find this solution.

I bought the 3.25 mm for my staffy after she made my mom fall. This prong collar has helped so much, she no longer chokes herself when she is walked. She rarely even tries to pull or get it off after she learned that she can't slip out of it like she can with her martingale collar.

Best automatic pilot I've ever experienced. My wild child immediately came under control. I also purchased the training video. The "pinch" collar also has a break away feature to ensure no injuries. Using in conjunction with the Amish lead and a second "safety" collar is pure genius. My dog has yet to disengage the pinch collar. I also make sure to use it high up on her neck to ensure it is in a more tender location rather than lower on the neck where she would feel the need to pull likening the feel to being in a working position.
I have now purchased two of these due to the closure getting lost. (The links have also disappeared!)<mysterious! I once was a bit desperate and had to drill four holes in a quarter to fashion an emergency closure. I seriously wish they sold additional closures. I am about to order a THIRD one due to this/theses issues.
I have to remove all collars when entering our local enclosed dog park. I have been witness to owners who do not do this with horrific results on two occasions of collars hooking and fear and injury occurring. My guess is this how the links and closures get dislodged and lost? Is when the leash and all collars are left hanging on the fence outside of the entrance to the dog park?!
The leash is finally coming apart. Even though its leather it has been through rivers, rain & snow storms! And of course my gal is requested often to carry it to me!
My original purchase was around 2.5 years ago! My gal turned 3 in November. I use this set up 3-4 daily and more on weekends. I take my gal to work with me and we walk throughout the day. I have an id on her safety collar and one on her, regular, brake away collar. I don't use one on the prong collar. I take the prong and safety collar off when she is not being supervised and when we aren't walking or using the leash. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Her safety collar has gotten caught before and I was so glad I happened to walk into the room when it was happening or she would have choked to death.
This setup is for working and walking only and not to be used as a stand alone setup. Don't be lazy! It could cost you your loved one.

I was so excited when this collar arrived; I have a white german shepherd and the discoloration from where the chrome collar metal touches my dog's neck leaves a pretty thick grey stain on his fur. The first thing I noticed about the Curogan collar was how loose the links came apart, but I figured it would be fine and possibly better than focusing on the skilled dexterity needed to put on and remove the chrome Herm Sprenger, not to mention the fact that I use a dominant dog collar in conjunction with the prong, so if the links did come apart I would have a safety. What I didn't anticipate was that this collar would come apart with the slightest jiggle... and OFF-LEASH. That's right, there was no pressure on the collar when the links would separate. The first time I noticed this was day two of use, we were hiking and my dog was running through short grass and I saw the collar dangling from the quick draw leash that Velcro's around his neck. I was shocked that the prongs could come apart this easily, he wasn't running through high brush, and there was no pressure pulling the collar, he wasn't even rough housing with another dog, he was just lightly jogging. I checked all the links, made sure everything was secure, and blew it off as a fluke. Well, three days later the same thing happened, the Curogan prong unlinked while my dog was hiking off-leash without any outside stimulation minus a light jog. This time I lost the collar altogether; I lost a $60 prong collar after 5 days of use. I'm extremely disappointed in this product and I do not recommend purchasing it if you're dog will be off-leash outdoors. I expected this collar to last a long time due to the quality of the metal and the price. I'm hoping that I possibly got a defective product, but if you notice the uncharacteristic ease of connecting and disconnecting the prongs, I would return it immediately. (Photo titled "Farewell Curogan Prong" - last documented sighting).

The Curogan metal is doing its job, I have an American Bulldog and a Pitbull, both have white fur; I have Curogan collars for both of them, but the clasp on the prong collar was NOT made of Curogan and was blackening my dog's neck,so I am ordering now a Martingale prong collar where the whole chain is made of Curogan, hopefully this time it will not darken her fur..

I purchased this prong collar because of the reviews I read about NOT Staining the White fur... Unfortunately.. his fur is still getting stained.. I'm hoping the stainless steel collar will work better .. Although the Curogan still stains.. I have received many compliments on the color of the color.. sort of like a Bling for Dogs... It works great I use it with the dominant dog collar... just hope to find one that does not stain my dog's fur... American Bulldog...

I, too, had a Pit Bull Terrier with white fur and had the chrome plated, as well as the stainless steel, prong collars really stained her fur. Switched to the curogan collar and there was no reaction to her fur at all. Plus, it looks good; I get comments about that all the time while on a walk.

I have not ordered this product yet. I mentioned it on a post to FB yesterday and upon gathering a lot of opinions and research will give my conclusion on this product. Firstly, as a dog trainer myself, I give a lot of credit to the training methods I carefully use. That being said, this is not an obselete choice for my line of work. I would wish to recommend that this collar be used for brief training periods to establish walking control and training. At this time, the only function it will serve for me is a training period equipment integrated with other methods of training such as harness walking and perhaps a few other items listed here. So I am glad this website has options as well. I see that certain dogs may benefit from training to establish a heel, and should gradually attempt other methods such as granting a command for this behavior. For getting in front of the problem things, one thing I do quite often, this is a tool I would use only after a trust bond has been established. As far as how to work it I am reading that you have to pinch prongs, fit them correctly to the dogs neck, and wear them appropriately and under handlers guidance. I may have to consult a trainer myself so that I may learn the correct way to fit a dogs neck. It is not the same way as a choke collar. If I would choose this method of training equipment, I would purchase this premium quality device and store it when not in use. Thank you for reading my review.

The collar itself performs as well as any. But I was unimpressed by the curogan. It seems rather thinly plated, and after a decent amount of wear and tear, it has worn off badly. I know buyers are warned about oxidation, but this is something else completely. I also have a curogan fur saver for my dog, which hasn't suffered the same fate.

I had a Pit Bull Terrier with white fur that reacted badly to the stainless steel and chrome plated pinch collars. Talk about ring "ring around the collar", the discoloration was obvious from 50 yards away. I switched to the curogan collar and her fur returned to white. Of course the collar also functions well. Well worth the price.
