Leerburg Muzzle Sizing Lookup

Measuring a dog's snout for a muzzle

Introduction

Find Every Muzzle Size That Fits Your Dog

Muzzle sizes vary by style and manufacturer, and the same label can mean different sizes on different muzzles. Enter your dog’s snout measurements below and this tool will show every size, across every muzzle we carry, that should fit.

If you are unsure which style or size to choose, measure your dog and call our office. We will help you decide.

How to Measure Your Dog

Two Measurements for Every Dog, Three for Some

Cheek Width Measurement
  • 1
Snout length. Measure along the top of the snout from the tip of the nose to a point 1/2" below the eyes.
  • 2
Snout circumference. Wrap the tape around the snout 1/2" below the eyes with the mouth closed.
  • 3
Cheek width (bully and flat-faced breeds). Measure the widest straight-line point across the head. Choose a muzzle about 1/4" wider than this. For wide-headed dogs, we recommend a muzzle with a cheek width of 5" or more.

Important note: It is easy to over-measure the length of small or narrow-snouted dogs. If a size that looks too short fits well in person, trust the fit. The tool can also show sizes that would fit if the length was over-measured by about 1/2" or 1".

Breeds marked "(est.)" in the Notes column are estimated by matching that size's length/circumference to the closest Polymer-Coated Wire Basket Muzzle sizes (the style with the most complete breed data) — not a confirmed fit for that style. Always measure and try on when possible.

GOOD FIT muzzle is 0-1/4″ longer than the snout (1/8″ ideal) and meets circumference (+ cheek width, if given) GOOD FIT - SHORTER only fits if snout length was over-measured by the amount shown (~0.5″ or ~1″) CHECK FIT check before recommending: the muzzle is 1/4″-3/4″ longer than the snout (only right if the circumference or cheek width needs this size), or a cheek width was entered and this size has no cheek-width data POOR FIT too short/long or too tight/loose - not enough measurements entered to evaluate

Fitting Rules

How the Tool Decides What Fits

  • Length: start with your dog’s measured snout length. The muzzle should be at least that long so the nose isn’t squished, ideally about 1/8" longer and no more than 1/4" longer. Only go longer if the muzzle you are considering needs the extra circumference or cheek width.
  • Circumference, active use: add 3"–4" to the snout circumference so the dog can open its mouth fully and pant.
  • Circumference, reactive or aggressive dogs: add 1"–2" for a more secure fit.
  • Cheek width: required for bully and flat-faced breeds. For wide-headed dogs, we recommend muzzles with a cheek width of 5" or more. Sizes without cheek-width data are marked “check fit”.

Important note: Breeds marked “(est.)” are estimated by matching each size to the closest Polymer-Coated Wire Basket Muzzle sizes. They are not a confirmed fit for that style. There is significant size variation within breeds, so these estimates are only a general suggestion. Choose the best fit based on your dog’s measurements, and try the muzzle on when possible.
