Q. Is there a national nosework organization?
Hey Cindy,

Is there a national nosework organization? I would like to start a club here in Vermont so I would love to talk to the correct people about how to do that. I would also love to have someone like Andrew Ramsey come out and do a talk and clinic about the sport. Any help you could give would be great.

Thanks,
Nathan

A. Hello Nathan,

The Nosework DVD series we are producing with Andrew Ramsey explains his system of how to train any and all types of dogs for substance detection. Our DVD series will show how this can be done with high drive working dogs as well as lower drive pet dogs. People with pet dogs can do this activity with their friends (or by themselves) and really enjoy themselves doing it just for fun. They can also train for the purpose of competing in K9 Nose Work *R through the organization of the National Association of Canine Scent Work. While the methods explained in the DVD series are not designed specifically to the finer details of this organization and were created to cover a much more broad spectrum of end users training detection to pet dogs, they certainly can and are being used by people training for this particular sport. While neither Andrew nor Leerburg are officially affiliated with the current association that has made an organized sport of nosework/pet dog detection with their set of rules, Andrew competes with his dogs, as do many of his students.

So many people are beginning to realize how great this activity is that it has more recently caught the eye of groups as large as the AKC and UKC and most certainly additional organized clubs and associations are imminent. That is the reason our DVD series covers pet dog detection/nosework as a whole instead of catering to the specifics of one organization.

You can get more information about the specifics of K9 Nose Work *R through the National Association of Canine Scentwork's website at www.funnosework.com.

You can get more information about Andrew Ramsey and his practical approach to training pet dog Nosework or his contact information for seminars at www.ramseyk9.com.

I hope this helps.

This will be the second training DVD that Leerburg has done on nosework with Andrew Ramsey. Our first DVD covered the foundation of Nosework training. If you do not have that DVD, you can go to our web page for The Foundation of Nosework and see a very detailed outline of what the training video covered. The goal of this training video is to cover Andrew Ramsey methods for teaching obedience to odor and a focused response. Both of these are very important skills that every detector dog should know.
