I have an eleven month old German Shepherd female that chews everything imaginable in our yard and now has an obstruction. What kind of muzzle can I get to stop her from chewing?

A. We would use a wire basket muzzle.

With this said, there are other issues here. A young dog like this that’s doing this almost always needs more physical exercise and mental exercise. It also needs to learn to relax in the environment it is in.

Each of these issues need to be addressed separately

1 - When a dog is introduced to a muzzle, it always needs to be conditioned to the muzzle. We have free streaming videos on our web site about this. Use the search function to find it in our video on demand. We had a lady a few weeks ago who just slapped a muzzle on and left. The dog went through 3 muzzles where it got them off and then chewed them up. That’s an owner problem not a muzzle problem. She should have conditioned the dog to the muzzle.

2 - Take your dog for some long walks or have it chase balls to get it a little tired.

3 - Better yet, when you home keep it in a dog crate in the house and use a chain link kennel outside. Control the dogs environment.

4 - You can exercise the dog's mind as well as it's body. The best way to do this is with training. The best training method is marker training. This is operant conditioning. I wrote a free article explaining it. We also have a number of DVDs on this:

a. The Power of Training Dogs with Food

b. The Power of Playing Tug with Your Dog

c. Basic Dog Obedience

The muzzle should be your last resort. Not your first.

I hope this helps.

These heavy-duty chrome muzzles are imported from Germany. This muzzle is a top quality product, unlike anything available in the United States. This is an excellent muzzle for people who have dominant dogs. These dogs need a muzzle to protect the handler during compulsive obedience training. This muzzle allows excellent airflow. There is enough room for the dog to drink with the muzzle on.

The goal of our pack structure training program is to produce a dog that is calm and submissive and a dog that follows the rules of the pack leader. This DVD teaches people how to become a pack leader that their dog respects and loves. Most people are not born pack leaders. In fact, far from it. The majority of dog owners (many who have owned dogs their entire life) simply do not know anything about the instincts that control our dogs or how strong these instincts are in the domestic dog. Oh people may have heard that they need to be a pack leader or they may have heard they need to be an ALPHA with their dog but they do not understand what this really means or how to accomplish it.
