I've had several people tell me that my 9 week old lab is too young to go for walks. Do you agree?

Full Question:
I have a 9 week old black lab male. I've had him for about 17 days. He's being crate trained and has been doing great.

I've had several people tell me he's far too young to take out for walks, and that I should wait until he's at least 12 weeks old. And even then, no more than 15 minutes at a time.

Do you agree with this?

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I don't agree nor do I disagree, it really all depends on your individual puppy.

Don't overdo it and don't force a pup to exercise. My Malinois puppies are hiking with the big dogs from a fairly early age but some other dogs aren’t as energetic or coordinated. I also am very aware of the signs that a pup has had enough and am willing to carry them if I have to.

I'd work more on building a relationship and engagement than I would worry about walks at this point.

There's plenty of time to walk him as he grows, I'd build a strong foundation of him wanting to be with you and working with the food and markers. That in itself is extremely fatiguing for a pup.

I hope this helps.
