Q. How do you get a dog to settle down in the house when you aren't training? My dog paces and whines in the house, I can't find the off switch.
Cindy,
I have had a few high drive GSD. Great dogs, except when we are in the home relaxing. I am relaxing but the dog is pacing and whining. He never seems to be able to turn it off. I was not able to ever find his "off" switch. Can you help me with some ideas or make a DVD on how to turn your dog off when you are not working? Think there is a need for us novice dogsters.
Thanks

A. We teach this to our dogs from the very first day of training. We use several words to let dogs know what we are doing.

Ready? Means it's time to train.
Good. Means keep on doing what you are doing.
Yes. Means you are free to break position to access your reward.Done. Means training is over.

We never play or train in the house. Dogs can be conditioned to always be ON in the presence of the handler if they aren't clear on the rules of training and play. The beginning steps to the training is covered in the video The Power of Training with Food.

3 Hours, 33 Minutes
Marker training (also called clicker training or operant conditioning) is one of the most profound systems of dog training that I have seen in my 50 years of owning, breeding and training working dogs. In its most basic form, it's a method of communication that is very clear for dogs to understand. Dogs learn the marker language quickly and when they do they thrive in training. The marker system produces dogs that love to train.
