Should I let my dog interact more with the neighbors because of the contact they will have, especially the person who may look after him from time to time if something happens or he needs to be looked after for a night if I am traveling?

Full Question:
I just got 10 week old Australian Cattle Dog. He has been home 5 days now. I read about not letting others not pet you dog and I have a question. I live alone in a rural setting in a neighborhood with about 4 houses pretty close by, so I interact with the neighbors a lot. One of the neighbors will be emergency contact for the puppy. I carry a tag on my key chain that says my pet is home alone please call .... and the neighbor will make take care of the dog. Should I let the dog interact more with the neighbors because of the contact they will have especially the person who may look after him from time to time if something happens or he needs to be looked after for a night if I am traveling?

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Absolutely, we don't let random strangers pet our puppies, but our family and close circle of friends that may have to take care of the puppy/dogs can be taught how to properly interact in a way that doesn't undo your training.

I have a 4 year old Cattle Dog; she is not necessarily a fan of anyone from outside her "circle," so it would be a good idea to familiarize your pup with your neighbor that is the emergency contact.
User Response:
Thank you. This web site is amazing. I have already got streaming right on a couple of video and have learned so much already. Even just watching the two videos I have watched there are thousands of mistake I would have made. Who knew it would be so hard to train yourself on when to hand a dog a reward. That pause between yes and handing the treat is hard to get thought my head.

Probably the most important video you could watch is Raising your Puppy, it's tons of info; it's about 7 hours long! BUT, it's hands down the best puppy raising advice I've ever been exposed to. I just took my German Shepherd puppy (now 13 weeks) out to the class in California that this video was based on. If you get a chance, check it out!
