Q. How do I get my dog to use the doggie door? She’s afraid of it.
I recently installed a doggie door and my german shepherd is afraid of it. I have been using luring to get her to go trough the door only when I'm holding the door up. Any thoughts on how I can get her to start using the door on her own.
Thanks

A. We have spring loaded doors on our kennel runs and I toss treats through and gradually help the dog less and less until they are pushing on the door and going through on their own. If she won't do this, get a second person and each of you call her back and forth and reward with a really high value treat each time. Let her get frustrated enough to push on the door, once they realize they can do this it doesn't typically take them long to start using the door.

Every new puppy owner has the same image of what they want their new dog to be like as an adult. First and foremost, everyone wants a great relationship with their dog but beyond that, those who plan on keeping their dog in their home want a calm, well-mannered, obedient house dog that minds and respects their family and friends. Those who plan on keeping their dog outside want a calm well mannered dog that is respectful to the family and is quiet in the yard or kennel. They only want their dog to bark at strangers that come near the home. New dog owners think the road to success only involves obedience training and house training new puppies. Well that is the old wives tale that is been spread for 100 years and nothing could be further from the truth.
