Full Question:
I am a novice with German Shepherds. I have 2 GSDs one is 4 and the other is 18 months. The problem is with the one that is 4 years old. After exercising or just playing with the other dog he shows up lame. This afternoon after a game of chase (in which he was doing fine) a few minutes later he begins to limp on one of his back legs. This has been going on for 3-4 weeks. This is not like him. He loves to run and play. He has also been trained for protection and obedience, any suggestions.Ben
Cindy's Answer:
I would recommend getting this dog to a vet for an exam and x-rays.
It could be muscle, ligament or joint problems and without x-rays, there is no way of knowing what the problem is. Beware of the vet that just wants to prescribe pain medicine without doing x-rays. I would find a veterinarian that is well versed in orthopedics and has experience with taking OFA x-rays. Here is an article about correct position for hip x-rays.
Good luck.
