Will having a puppy follow a food lure into the sit, down, stand and heel kill the drive?

Full Question:
Hello,

I have recently purchased both the Power of Food and Power of tug videos and will be getting my Malinois puppy this Friday. I have gone through the videos and taken notes, but have a quick question for you please. I just want to be sure that having the puppy follow a food lure into the sit, down, stand and heel will not kill drive. I understand that the luring needs to be done without command and without correction. Thank you for your time. My son was in Iraq twice over the last few years also with the 82nd and is now stationed in Co. Thank you son for his service and god bless.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Reward based training, marker training & luring will not kill drive as long as it is done properly. Any type of interactions done with dogs can bore them if you are not engaging enough or make it a tedious drill. The key to remember with a pup, the most important thing is teaching them how to learn… even if they aren’t doing each thing perfectly if they are engaged and into the sessions you are on the right track.

My experience with marker training is that the dog's drive gets higher and higher as he understands more about communicating with me. My dog Rush was trained with this system and I have never once done a "drive building" exercise with him. He's got plenty to spare too.

Enjoy your pup!
