We got a new puppy to help our dog get over the loss of our other dog. She has become aggressive towards the puppy. How can I help my older dog get over the loss of her bestfriend and accept the new puppy?

Full Question:
I need help. I recently lost my German Shepherd to cancer, she was only 5 years old. We also have a 3 year old Malamute that is very depressed because of it. Everyone we know told us to get another dog for our Malamute so we did, but she has become very aggressive towards the puppy and I am afraid she is going to hurt her. How can I help my older dog get over the loss of her best friend and accept the new puppy.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I would not allow the puppy to have direct interaction with the Malamute. I'd read the article Ed wrote on introducing dogs.

I would also caution that not all dogs make friends with new dogs right away and some never accept a new dog. They are all different.

Make sure you are teaching the puppy rules and do not allow the puppy to “bother” the older dog. Think about your reaction if your best friend died… you may not be really ready to move on right away.

I'd recommend offering leadership and training to the new puppy and don’t force her on the older dog.

I'd read the article Ed wrote on The Groundwork to Becoming your Puppy's Pack Leader.

For the puppy, I’d highly recommend Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months and Pack Structure for the Family Pet.

I hope this helps,
