What is the best way to travel by car with our new puppy? Crate or seat belt attachment?

Full Question:
Thank you so much for taking the time to help, there is so much information I feel like I'm drinking from a fire hydrant. What is the best way to travel with the dog? We have van so a crate would fit just fine in the back of it. I've also seen straps that buckle to the seat belt and clip to the dog's collar but I was kinda of leary about that, maybe when the dog is much older? Also, do you suggest a harness or a collar to start with? I'm leaning towards the slip collar you sell to start.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I never travel with my dogs unless they are crated, it's the safest way and I get my puppies used to it from day one. I am not a fan of the seatbelt attachments, in the event of an accident most of them are not going to protect your dog enough. You will want a solid crate (not a wire crate) and make sure it's ratchet strapped down so it can't move around.

I use both a harness and the martingale collar with my puppies. I'm raising a puppy now, and I use both so he's accustomed to them. I use the inexpensive nylon harness for puppies since they grow so quickly.
User Response:
I hadn't seen the cheaper harness, thank you for showing me that one. That is a good point about the safety aspect with that seatbelt attachment. We travel a lot during the summer months so I'm looking ahead and trying to do my best to have a solid travel plan. Thanks again, I will look through this information more and start the learning process. :)
