Can restrained recalls cause separation anxiety?
Full Question:
Hello, I have a 7-month-old GSD that I'm going to start training the recall with, I'm wondering if certain methods like restrained recalls can cause issues with separation anxiety? My dog is very well behaved in her crate and doesn't have an fearfulness being restrained by others but, inside the house she will continuously whine if I leave, even if other people are with her. If we're at the park, front yard or other public areas and I calmly walk away she will act out as though we're preforming a restrained recall. If I tell her to stay she will only whine but once I get to a certain distance she will start fighting to get to me. She has no issues in our backyard though and is very well behaved if she sees me leave, if she doesn't she will search for me. I would very much appreciate any advice on what exactly I should do.
Cindy's Answer:
If you are worried about it creating anxiety then skip restraint and take the dog out on a long line, wait til something gets her attention and work on the recalls that way. In my experience, a restrained recall has no correlation with separation anxiety but with that said, I can't advise you on exactly what to do as I haven't met you and your dog.
