Should I neuter my Malinois to prevent potential aggression in the future?
Full Question:
Hi Cindy! I have a 1 y/o Belgian Malinois. He has had a history of aggressive behavior, specifically biting, and has bitten me, my wife, and my trainer. I had him evaluated by Tarheel Canine Center, in Sanford NC. They are well familiar with working with Belgian Malinois and other shepherd breeds. To address the biting they recommended: 1 Plenty of exercise. He gets exercised 2 hours a day and 2. Obedience Training. He attended in-board basic obedience training for 5 weeks and advanced obedience training for 4 weeks.
Ever since he completed basic obedience training, his biting behavior has stopped. So, given this history, should I still have him neutered?
He had two trainers and both recommended neutering. Both were concerned as he gets older (but still a pup), the testosterone will kick in and he may do something stupid. I have reservations about neutering given Dr. Beck's video and Ed Frawley's opinion on neutering. What are your thoughts? What do you recommend?
Cindy's Answer:
If you do have him neutered, I'd wait until he's fully mature physically (around 2 years of age). Neutering isn't something I suggest as a solution to behavioral issues unless it's something like not leaving the female dogs in the home alone or something linked to hypersexual behavior.
I have a 14-month-old GSD so I understand what you are dealing with. Young male working line dogs can be a handful, especially during the time between 1-2 years old. I'm trying to take my own advice most days haha!

User Response:
Thanks Cindy! This is very helpful. I really don't want to neuter him because of the potential health consequences and the possibility it might shorten his life. He's a sweet dog but has in the past displayed biting behavior which has, fortunately, stopped. He sometimes tries to mount me or others, humps the sofa pillows, and marks everything when we walk. But those things I can manage and live with.
