I'm using touch pads to teach the send away and jumps for Mondioring. Is it better to train those exercises separately or can you work on both at the same time?

Full Question:
Hello! I'm training my older dog for Mondio, and am wondering about the order of training the send away and the jump pattern with touch pads. I'm not sure if this is mentioned at all in the DVDs, as I do have the Jumps DVD and Send Away DVD, and am still working through watching the Send Away DVD. My dog has a decent understanding of touch pads, but I haven't taught either of these exercises before. Since both use the touch pad as a target, is it better to train one exercise first, then move on, or is it okay to work on both at the same time? And if it's better to train one first, is there one you recommend?

Thank you!
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
You can train both exercises at the same time but I might split them up during a session or work on them during different sessions at first. When teaching jumps, I always start with just the jump uprights first so the dog can understand the pattern before adding the extra aspect of jumping over something to the mix. I hope that makes sense
User Response:
Thanks Cindy! Yep, that definitely makes sense, I had planned on spending a lot of time on the jump pattern first, since it's full blown winter where I am as well. :) I guess the different pre-cues and ways of setting up the exercises make it clear in the dog's mind that they are different exercises as well even though the touch pads are in both.
Thanks again!
