How long does a treadmill need to be for my dog? She's a 14 month old Dutch/Belgian Shepherd.

Full Question:
Hi Cindy! I need to buy a treadmill for my dog and would like some advice on the size. I cannot afford a canine treadmill. The treadmill I am considering has a 'running space' of 104x39cm. It is for a Dutch/Belgian shepherd who is now 14 months. She is approximately 58cm from the top of her of tail to her shoulders. The treadmill is for walking only and only for a small percentage of total exercise. Would this treadmill be an adequate size for this dog? Also, would such a treadmill size be of sufficient size for an adult dog of this breeding? Look forward to hearing from you.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I don't think that would be long enough.

The treadmill belt should be longer than your dog's stride length. For example, a German Shepherd with a stride length of 6.5' needs a treadmill with a belt that's 7' or longer.
User Response:
Thanks for your reply. The example you gave is useful - at least I have some guideline now! Thanks for all you do at Leerburg I am getting brilliant results with my dog from watching the Leerburg content. The content is superb - the format really works. Am really fortunate to have found Leerburg soon after getting my pup. Last week we walked through a field of sheep and she walked to heel and did not need corrections (even though some sheep were 3meters away)....we had engagement!!! and she knew what she had to do! She is not properly or fully trained yet but is getting 'sharper' each day. Glad I learnt from Leerburg not to push her too much and to introduce different levels of 'distraction' gradually- it is a delight to see her evolve. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Best wishes
