I have noticed lately that my female Dobe throws up in the morning. Usually right after she wakes up. There is no food in it just looks like saliva and its yellow in colour. Her behaviour or apetite hasn't changed. She does this maybe once a week on average. Any ideas???

Yep, she's probably hungry. I would feed her a bit in the morning. My younger dog does this if I forget to feed him breakfast. It's bile that she is throwing up. Lots of dogs do this. You could split her meal up between morning and evening. Works for me and my dog

Yes, mine too on occasion. When I look back on each incident it's usually when he has had long periods between meals. I do feed 2X a day. He does it sometimes in the evening as well, but not regularly, and only when I withhold food because we've been out on a long walk. Now I try to remember to bring some little treats with me so he's not running completely on empty. Not to worry!

Thanks, will try to feed her right when she wakes up. Any ideas why this happens? If I were to feed her a cup of kibble before bed would that help? Or should I just feed her in the morning?

I would, as Karmen suggested, split her food up. EG. if she eats 4 C. of food a day give her 2 in the am and 2 in the pm. Or, if you prefer her to have more at one meal go 3 and 1. Whatever works for you. But how would you like it if you only ate once a day?

I'm not inclined to believe dogs vomit from hunger; rather, they are probably getting rid of the bile in their stomachs cuz the acid is irritating their stomachs. Try giving one Cimetidine (Tagamet) pill at night before putting them to bed and see if the acid reduction relieves the morning vomitting. (And yes, Cimetidine is perfectly safe for dogs)

But why give medication before you try other solutions?

Cuz you said you already ARE feeding 2x per day and yet your dog still sometimes vomits first thing. He's telling you his stomach HURTS or he wouldn't be unloading it - you ever had acid stomach? It ain't real pleasant.

Hi Danielle,
Our dogs do the same exact thing. They eat twice a day and we arrange their feedings according to their exercise periods which vary because of our schedule. Because of the variance of feeding times, sometimes there is a longer time between evening and morning feedings. They always vomit in the morning after a longer fast. Since they both do this occasionally and it's always after a longer than usual fast, that's what I figured happened.
I don't believe in medication unless absolutely necessary. And, there are side effects see below:
Side Effects:
Headache, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, sleepiness, dry skin or dry mouth may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Hair loss, increased sweating, anxiety, change in sex drive, breast enlargement in males and change in taste perceptions may also occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop a skin rash, hives, a change in heartbeat, jaundice, diarrhea, mental confusion, depression, difficulty walking, vision changes, trouble urinating, joint or muscle pain, ringing in the ears or breathing difficulty while taking this medication. Notify your doctor immediately if you notice black, tarry stools or "coffee ground" vomit which may suggest bleeding.
