Good Morning Everyone!!!!
This is my very first post on your forum and I am VERY excited to be here! I read as much as I could on Prong Collars and Leerburg's "how to properly fit a prong collar" gave me the confidence and the knowledge to finally purchase one and use it, so Thank You Mr. Leerburg!
I have a 16 Month old (on the 27th) German Rott who weighs in at 100.3lbs.
I purchased the correct collar for his size and removed some prongs...here's my problem....
If I remove one more prong from his collar, it seems to be EXTREMLY tight to me....if I leave it as is, it slides down and lets say he is sniffing something and goes to my right, the collar actually turns and changes postion. So I am having to adjust his collar alot. Am I just being paranoid that it is too tight by removing that one extra link, considering the amount of play it has in it now??? He has a VERY sensitive neck, so I want to make CERTAIN I am using this collar correctly!! He has been raised with check chains (choke chains...I hate the name of it!lol), but that was completely non-productive in the situations I needed it most.
Thank You SO MUCH in advance for your advice!!!
I want what is BEST for Roman, so properly fitting the collar is VERY VERY important to me! KathyB

I forgot something!!!! I use the collar on the dead ring position, as Roman has mastered the walk and our only problems is he has moments when he tries to pull to meet new people or play/meet new dogs. Thank You! KathyB

I would keep it tight enough so that it can't rotate on the neck. It might seem too tight to you but he should be all right with it.

Kathy,
When the prong is in resting mode on your dog, if he chokes, gags, or pants very harshly as if his windpipe is being constricted, then the collar is too tight -- Otherwise, it fits properly when worn high & snug right behind his ears & jaw...
Just save the excess links where you can find them if he grows or gains weight & you DO need to enlarge it again <:-)
How anyone can live without a dog is beyond me... |

Thank You VERY much! None of those things happen (choking, gagging, etc.), but it just seemed to be really tight to TO ME...however I learned how to fit the collar correctly on this website, and it does not "rest" high up currently, but rides down, so I will remove a link and see how that goes! THANK YOU!!!!

UPDATE! I was sick for about a week or so and Saturday I put on Roman's prong collar to take him for a walk (without removing a prong) and boy did he grow!lololol I no longer have to remove a prong because it fits PERFECT! I was beginning to wonder if my Rotty was EVER going to start filling out!lol Welp....he's starting to bulk up!

Kathy Dont let him get to big. You should still be able to feel some ribs in there. To much weight can put alot of stress on joints and rotts are prone to Hip and Elbow Displasia!! So be carefull and dont be so concerned of having a "Huge Rott". Sorry I know this is WAY off topic but felt this Needed said here!!Thanx!! And Good luck with the prong collar!!

Thank you for your post!!!! O...He is looking AWESOME! He is 16 month's old the 27th of June and only weighs 100.3lbs. I am VERY CAREFUL to not over feed him & I also buy his food from the vets, as the vet said that Rotts are prone to all that you mentioned above AND I also have him on a low carb, high protein food.
The vet said that he is what he would call the PERFECT weight/size/look for a Rott and he wished ALL Rotts looked like he did. He is very lean, which I am happy about...it was just me waiting for the bulking up part...I feed him exactly what the amount says to feed him, twice a day and he gets NO PEOPLE FOOD!lol Thank you for your comments though, they are very appreciated!!!.....I was very concerned about his weight when I first got him as you always see these huge Rotts that wiggle when they walk, but the vet said that is something I DON'T want...that Roman looks PERFECT and to keep doing what I'm doing. I have had him since he was 11 month's old and he has only gained 4lbs., so I'm very pleased!

Forgot to add....his Sire weighed in at 180 and his mother weighed in at 160, so he is going to be a big dog as it is, the last thing I want is a fat, big dog!lololol
