Hi, my 3 yr old girl (German Shepherd) has had a red tissue like spot on her eyes so I took her to the Vet and she ran some drops in her eyes and looked through some light thing. The Vet was concerned and told me if the antibiotics don't clear this up in a week we need to see an eye doctor. There is one somewhat close by. Anyway, has anyone had any eye things that a Vet wasn't sure what it was. It looks to be in both eyes. My girl rubs at them now and then. I did research online and read about Punnis?? anyone had this? Thanks for any replys, I am nervous because you can just get a feeling when the Vet isn't able to tell you what it is that it may be more than an infection. Would like any info. Judy

Hi Judy, My Zorba would occasionally bust a blood vessel in his eye doing protection work, but it never bothered him & he never rubbed at them. Since it is in both eyes, & she is rubbing at them, I would call am opthamologist & get a 2nd opinion right away. Let us know what happens!

Here's a good overview of the common eye problems:

And here is a list of detailed presentations, explained:

But what is "punnis"? Can you point me to a web page? It doesn't ring a bell at all.
I'd go with Susan's suggestion and get an ophthalmologist's opinion right away, especially with both eyes affected. JMO.

I want to thank you Susan and Connie for your suggestions. I misspelled it, I think it is Pannis, anyway common to Shepherds from what I read. I just started the antibiotics the Vet suggested we try first, it will only be a week, I know, all of me wants it to be just an infection. So, in exactly one week I will be either getting her to an eye doc or thanking my lucky stars. Judy I'll write in again on her condition.

Ah ... isn't that inflamed corneas (pannus)?
I have some stuff saved about that, I'm almost positive, if you want more material. I hope you'll post back when you have more news.
Good luck!

My dog has had corneal pannus for three years. She sees a veterinary eye specialist. Her doctor told me that it is usually manageable, is not inherited but is found more often in certain "lines", and is believed to be related to UV exposure in susceptible dogs.
My dog uses cyclosporin eyedrops every other day (more often if there is a flare-up) and sees the doctor annually (also, more often if there is a problem). She is doing very well (just had her eye exam). There are additional options available if the condition worsens.
I would definitely see a specialist if the veterinarian doesn't know what it is and I have found my specialist to be very helpful and knowledgeable.

May I ask you what the effect (if any) on your dog's vision has been? And by "flare-up," do you mean something like visible inflammation?
I'm sure Judy will appreciate the information you posted, and probably a lot of other people too. :>

Connie, Yes it would be visible inflamation that you see in the dogs eyes. I also have a dog that has this condition. It is manageable but doesn't sound to cureable. My dog doesn't seem to have any limitations, but we have to put eye drops in his eyes every other day, or so. He currently has some inflamation but with some eye drops every day or twice daily it will go back down. I first noticed it with a red like sack in the outer corners of his eyes. It doesn't seem to pain him at all, besides the itchiness. Dogs with this condition have the possability of going blind if the owner doesn't take the correct steps to get it under control. I will try to find the links I have saved with TONS more info and will try to post them.
Regards,
Brandon

Connie,
Happy to help. As far as I can tell, there has been no visual impairment. She catches flies, balls, can see her air kong thrown far down the field and her doctor said her eyes are looking "great".
Regarding flare-ups, you look for redness in the eyes, itchiness (rubbing with paws or mine rubs hers on the couch, my leg etc.), squinting and excessive blinking. Also, I check her corneas with a small light but I don't really recommend this unless you have been taught how to do it and what to look for. Additionally, the flare-ups are more common in the warmer months and at higher altitudes due to the increased UV exposure. Luckily for my dog, she has had very few of these episodes.
