Hi,
I know a lot of you are using the RAW diet for your dogs. Has anyone used Costco/Kirkland brand dog food? I didn't get to thoroughly inspect the packaging but I noticed it mentioned grain et cetera being ingredients of the dry dog food.

Is it super cheap? My guess is it's junk food. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Some dogs seem to do fine and actually live long lives on the junk foods. Some people live fine on McDonalds and tv dinners too. Is it optimal? Me thinks not. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

There are far worse foods out there. Here are the ingredients for the lamb and rice:
Lamb, Lamb meal, whole grain brown rice, rice flour, white rice, egg product, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved witn mixed tocoperols and Vitamine E), beet pulp, potatoes, fishmeal, flaxseed, natural flavor, millet, brewers dried yest, carrots, peas, choline chloride, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, taurine, vitamin E suppliment, Vitamins & minerals
Crude Protein 23% minimum
Crude Fat 14% minimum
The food is made by Diamond which would be a concern for me. The problem with their foods was corn and there isn't any in the Kirkland food, but I still don't think I would feed any Diamond products.

My girls ate Kirkland lamb and rice for about a year and did fine (I thought)
After doing research on this and other sites I started them on Chicken Soup (Another Diamond Product) their coats became softer and the bad breath I thought I had to live with was gone almost overnight! We then transitioned to Innova and now on to The Honest Kitchen each transition has been better for them.
Just my two cents but good food makes all the difference.
p.s. I now eat better too. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Hi,
I didn't get to read the nutritional content information. My other half was in a hurry to leave the store.
I also checked their web site and they didn't have any information about the Kirkland food on the web site. It seems they carry Newman's Own Organic Dog Food on the web.
I know that the mainstream dog food is packed with vermin! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> I am probably going to go with Innova.
My local pet store has a great selection and the staff is knowledgeable.

Carolyn, I've got a friend on another dog forum that has done very well on the Kirklands. I feed my Aussie/husky mix Diamond Large Breed Adult and my Malinois and my husky/Rott mix Chicken Soup. I appreciate at least how Diamond owned up to the mistake with the bad batch of food (which only affected the corn based formulas). Chicken Soup is an excellent food for the price! Whenever I can buy a chest freezer, I'll probably switch to entirely raw, but for now, CS is a very good food for the price. I can't afford $2-3 a pound like some of the super premiums.
This is rather off topic, but incidently, if anyone is a ferret owner, Chicken Soup kitten is actually one of the highest rated ferret foods out there. Much better than like 95% of even the specially made ferret food. I get the little trial sized bags of CS kitten so it stays fresh and it is like half the price of Marshall's ferret diets (which are the equivalent of Science Diet for ferrets...crappy and overpriced).

The top three ingredients in the "Super Premium Puppy" are Chicken, Chicken meal and Whole grain brown rice. I asked a nutritionalist at the local pet supply store and he said to keep feeding my boy the Kirkland.
