Sort of a silly question I guess, but does it mean anything when a dog howls? By howling myself, I can get my pup to howl pretty good, its hilarious. I am wondering why he does this??
'Tis a mystery, biologists still scratch there heads on that one. Helps establish pack unity while warning other packs/preditors away is one theory. I'd check the wolf web sights for that.
Howling is communication. Can either convey territory information, a warning, advertising for mates, etc.
My 2 year old GSD was barking at a fire truck siren last month and the barking suddenly morphed into a mournful howl. Not sure who was more surprised, me or her! Definitely an instinctual trigger to a stimulus...
Ha-ha, Beagles BAY, but if you really want to hear some serious howling, just get 100 Irish Wolfhounds at an IW Specialty to do a group howl-around -- Talk about "Hounds of the Baskervilles" making all your hair stand on end, even in broad daylight <:-O
I believe it was last Friday night. The dog was lying on his bed relaxing/sleeping in the living room. All of a sudden he jumps up and starts to growl/bark/howl. Then he ran over to me...
So I go outside (he was sleeping by the front window) and sure enough every dog in the neighborhood is going nuts.
I've always liked howling, in a sad sort of way....it's so primitive. It sounds lonely to me, always has, and is so significantly different in communication than barking. It may be that howling is the only time that a dog is actually not verbally communicating with a human, but communicating its primitive nature, either to itself or to other dogs (or wolves to wolves). I think the sound that some sirens make may sound like howling to a dog (even if rather high pitched). Maybe that's why the siren gets a response.
I noticed my one american shepherd never howls, whereas my czech shepherd does. The first time she did it was when a fire truck was going by my house (we live a few blocks from a fire station), she started to bark quick short barks and then went into a full out howling for 15 seconds. She did this about 4 times in a row before she stopped. I just started to bust out laughing at her. I thought it was the cutest thing, she was sitting right next to me at the time and I could see her lips in a circle while she howled. It reminded me of a cartoon dog so much I couldn't stop laughing. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
