Can a trainer back up and "re-condition" an e-collar wise dog using Ed's conditioning technique?
For example; rotating and using multiple collars (prong, flat, e-collar and invisible fence collar) at the same time while only correcting with the prong collar for a few weeks. Then after a few weeks of putting on/taking off all of these collars many times, start using the e-collar stim again. Will the two weeks help?
Any experience in this area?
Thanks.

Does anyone have any experience re-conditioning an e-collar wise dog? The reason I ask is that I never did Ed's conditioning, and my dog has not used the e-collar in 2 months or so due to it no longer working. When I get the new collar, I would start over per Ed's video, but just wondering if anyone has any guidance here or would I be wasting my time?
Any help most apprciated.
thanks

Geoff,
If you ask me once a dog becomes collar smart, they will stay that way. You could probably compare it to trying to get the dog to forget a sit command.
It is VERY trickey to avoid this type of conditioning (becoming C-smart). But I have found that, once c-smart, if the various collars are used in the proper manner as to avoid a collar smart dog over a very extended period of time, then it can cause a bit of confusion in the dog as to what mechanism is correcting him. He will be aware of the collar still, but a bit unsure if the collar actually is the implement for delivery of the correction.
I'd be interested in the input of others as well.

Geoff, I sent you a PM last week suggesting that you email Ed Frawley with this question directly -- Did he respond ???
Personally, I would follow his e-collar protocol precisely as he teaches it on the DVD -- I don't think it would be a waste of your time to re-condition this dog at all & I'll be interested to see how everything goes <:-)

No, it's definately not a waste of time.. it just takes a lot longer once the dog becomes collar smart. I have been working w/ my own on this. It can be done... but I don't think that the dog will ever really be re-conditioned to be completely oblivious to the collar once they have become collar smart.
I will admit that I have this experience with only the one dog and I have not viewed the DVD produced by Leerburg, on this topic. Candi, are you saying that it can in fact be done; the re-conditioning not the initial conditioning that is?

I'm saying Geoff ought to email EF and ask him this question directly, LOL -- IMHO, anyone who works their pet on an e-collar owes it to themselves & their dog/s to invest in the DVD...

It's a lot harder to discuss details with someone who's never watched the video at all <:-)

Thanks for the advise. I do own the video and actually found some great training advice for people with and WITHOUT collars. Ed's training style seems so intuitive to me, so I use it.
Regarding the re-conditioning. I decided to try it regardless of what others say. I will keep you updated.
Instead of getting my broken collar fixed, I am looking into purchasing a new collar. This is due to the failure of the original collar, and the failure of my "invisible fence" products by the same manufacturer within 9 months of purchase. These were seperate units, not tied to one "contain and train" model. The brand is Innotek. I am looking at Dogtra and will post a new topic on this board.
The new purchase will extend the time of collar conditioning to more than two weeks. We'll see how it goes.
thanks again.

In a nutshell, they know when they are wearing the collar and when they are not. So when the collar is on they behave and when it is off they do whatever they want.....

Geoff, I guess you could say I reconditioned my dog to the e-collar. He got wise to the remote, not the collar. I guess I got in the habit of kind of pointing it at him on the correction. I put it away for a couple of months, went back through following Ed's method and it was fine. I now keep the remote in my pocket.
