OP of the thread here. I Didnt feel as if the thread was too far afield. Perhaps their was no further documentation available. I DID appreciate all the responses, anecdotal or otherwise...
Brock - my anecdotal story:
I had a pretty obnoxious akita/shep for eight years. Never ever had any problems with loss of property or uninvited visitors on the property.
After we no longer had that dog, we went dogless for about 8 months. During that 8 months, stuff started going missing from our garage and yard. While we never actually caught anyone coming onto our property, we were pretty sure it was happening. Finally, my $800 parrot was stolen out of the yard. I made a police report and mentioned to the officer that I had lived there 8 years with no incident. He asked if we had a dog previously. Told him, yes, as a matter of fact - and a rather aggressive one at that. He specifically said - Looks like it's time to get another big dog.
Got a shep mix (100+ pound wookie looking thing) shortly thereafter. Have not had anything go missing since.
Hm . . . What can we conclude from this?
Roz.
p.s. I lived smack in the city if that's a detail you care to know.
Thanks for the story, indeed even in the abscence of empirical evidence common sense would indicate dogs are a strong deterrence in almost all instances.
And, for what it's worth, sorry about your parrot!
ok I was only asking why the thread got shut down but if you really want to piss Ed and the mods off, circumvent thier locks.
I'm still wondering where the Mods are, guess they're busy training thier dogs
Maybe the thread was locked due to some dip#&$% (sorry brock, but come on) comment about a hybrid. Have you read up on the general concensus on hybrids on this site? If not, please do.

Oh I let be known that my sable GSD is from special East German Secret Police and Border Patrol lines crossed with Carpathian man eating wolves to make her a little edgier
That was my attempt at humour complete with the little emoticon to let everybody know it was a joke
Well even if there was a mention about Hybrid, why not give a warning, but to shut down the topic for that??
I thought it was an interesting topic, I mean common some topics that are going on now are re-runs , just a different person posting it the thread. Some new topics are greatly appreciated.
I do think that a lot of people wonder about having a dog makes a difference in being a victim of a crime in their own home.My husband is in law enforcement and would say yes, it does. But if somoene want to get you, really wants to get you then it makes no difference
