I just picked up some raw beef femurs. They are fresh and smell fine. My dog won't touch them! This is the first time he has seen a raw beef bone. He used to raw chicken. Any suggestions to get him to try them? Is it safe to cook them lightly?

Don't cook them, but you can smear some peanut butter or cream cheese on them.....I would also scoop out some or most of the marrow as this is really rich and could cause upset tummy and loose stool.

Beef femurs are recreational bones, not bones to be considered in their actual raw diet. These are too hard for chewing and many people, in fact, do not even give them to their dogs for treats. If you want to give it as a treat, make sure your dog is supervised while gnawing on it, and when he is finished, pick it up and throw it away. A dried-out recreational bone is as good as concrete as far as chewing is concerned.
NEVER, ever cook a bone for any reason. This is what makes them dry and brittle and do serious damage to a dog's insides.
If you want some more variety, try pork necks or turkey necks or wings. Otherwise, just stick with your chicken.
His main diet is Canadie. He gets raw chicken with bones once or twice a week. I just thought he'd like a big ole marrow bone as a fun treat. It's rainy and nasty here today, and I thought I'd keep hi occupied for a while!
Thanks Carol for the suggestion of scooping the marrow out! I didn't even think about the richness.
Sorry for the long speech, Tracy. I misread your post and thought you were looking to feed the leg bone as part of his diet. I will pay more attention in the future.
No problem Jan! I'm a Raw feeder wannabe right now, so any and all education is welcome! I do have another question though...
I accidently bought boneless chicken thighs instead of ones with bones! I just want to make sure I can still give those to him. I know with bones are prefered, but can I still replace one of his meals a week with a couple of boneless thighs.
