I have switched to BARFING all my dogs & they look great for it, they have substantially more energy & there are all but one positive result.
2 of them have lost a considerable amount of weight, I admit one of them was a little overweight to begin with & now he is a lot more agile etc, but
they are starting to lose that light covering of fat over their ribs. I dont think it's due to lack of food, they get plenty. What (if other than meat) can you add to gain weight? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I experenced much the same thing, my supplier told me that it takes about a month to a month and a half for the dogs to "Detox" off the kibble, in which time they will look sick and all sorts of crap happens to them, weepy eyes, waxey ears, loss of drive etc etc.. my dog went through this for a month easy... then one day he was a diffrent dog and started really putting muscle on.... if it has just been a short time on the barf diet... give it awhile. Unless your 2 dogs really start to falter.... then I would look into it further.

What are you feeding them? Turkey necks have little fat on them so if you are feeding that, switch to chicken backs which have more fat. You can also add lard or oil to their mush. Are they getting enough meat? There should be more meat than veggies. Maybe you can post what a sample meal is like? My dog didn't loose any weight on barf, not that he could afford it since he is only 67 pounds.

Thanks for the replies guys,
Lonny B,
I have been using the diet for about 8 months, they did go through detox after about 5 weeks on it, but thats over with.. so I dont thinks its the fault.
Lanegirl,
I feed them approx 1 cup of vegie pulp, plus all the oils, vitamins minerals etc. I also add Glucosomine for joint health, with the meat, I vary it, 75% of the meals they get about 1 kilogram of mince, other nights an equal amount of sardines or chicken wings, necks or backs. They do get bones & about 4 eggs / week?
They do gulp it down compared to their eating kibble, but I think the diet has stimulated their appetite? They have a ton more energy, it wasn't noticeably down before, but it is noticeably up since the switch to barf?

Switching to raw can increase your dogs energy! How are the stools? Are they small? Can you tell if the food is digested?
You may want to add some digestive enzymes to help your dogs get the most from the food. Sometimes it takes awhile for a dogs system to start producing the enzymes etc needed to break down all the food and use it effectively.
If you want to add some calories you can add some cottage cheese; 'raw' goats milk etc. These are very good for your dog. Living in Canada I should know how much a kilogram is compared to a lb....but I am old enough to still remember (fondly) the old system. I give my adult active dogs 1-2 lbs of meat/bones a day. I think you may want to increase the meat.

Thankd for info Shandar, 1 kg = 2.2 lbs, ie I am feeding 2.2 lbs of meat PLUS bones PLUS vegies / day.
The stools are normal & semi formed to hard. The food is definately digested.
What do I add for digestive enzymes though?

Well definitely sounds like you are feeding enough meat and quantity. I believe the guideline is 3% of body weight in food. So a 75 pounds dog would be right around 2.2 pounds of food. I have been trying to fatten up my dog for years it can be very tough. My dog wouldn't eat chicken backs to save his life and then only one.

Hi all -- this is my 1st post so bear with me as I learn to figure out this board. My Rott was raised on BARF for 4 1/2 years (sire & dam both were on the BARF diet/ min. vaccs.) and I have noticed that the number one weight gainer is chicken. If your dog knows how to eat bones, why not give him a thigh w/ skin to chew on instead of the usual necks and backs or wings (that are low in fat)? Also, I recommend adding pork fat (make sure you freeze your pork for at least 10 days) or beef fat. Try not to give too much turkey b/c not only is it low in fat, it also contains tryptophan. Make sure you buy fatty beef, not the lean hamburger.

I recently purchased a pre-made frozen barf dog food for my dog. It comes in 3 lb. tubs, chicken, beef, lamb & rabbit. My dog only eats the rabbit. I feel like throwing all this barf in the trash. $200 bucks worth and my dog would rather go hungry.
