I've been feeding BARF for nearly three weeks now, and my little mixed breed bitch has started chewing her feet (she woke me up from a deep sleep last night with her &*^%$#@@# chewing noises!!!). This is totally new; she has never done this before, even when on kibble. Anyone have this happen? Could this be a part of the "detox" process, or do you suppose she is allergic to something I'm feeding her? The other possibility is that while we were on vacation, she escaped and was missing in action for over 24 hours. When we got her back, she had nasty gas; probably from eating things that she shouldn't have, while out on her adventure. I'm thinking maybe she's still having symptoms from something she ate at that time, which was 5 days ago.
Of course, if she doesn't stop really soon, or if it gets worse, we'll take her to the vet. It can't possibly be comfortable for her. I'm just throwing it out here, hoping someone may have had a similar experience.

Are her feet intact?( no cuts, burrs, bugs, glass, worn pads, etc.)Could she have picked up a fungus in her travels? I can't imagine that food would cause that, JMO. I don't have any other ideas, really.

Well - maybe allergies either enviromental or dietary or even foxtails but you have probably checked for that already. Sometimes dogs that are low in zinc chew their feet alot so you might want to consider zinc supplementation if nothing else works.

Her feet look fine. No hair loss, and from what little skin I can see, it looks pink, not red or irritated. I had thought that perhaps there is something in bloom right now that doesn't agree with her. She didn't chew too badly last night, so maybe it's passing.

Have you used any carpet cleaning or deodorant stuff recently? I used "Shake n Vac" once to freshen up my carpets and it did affect my Great Dane's feet. She was constantly licking. I stopped using the stuff and she was O.K. again.
Just a thought sometimes we look for a complex answer when the cause may be something simple and just something a little different in the dog's home environment

No, I haven't used any substances in my house or yard. The most recent change in her environment is her diet. That's why it came to mind first.
I just realized also, that I started using the kelp powder and alfalfa powder just 4 days ago. Perhaps it's one of those?
It could be so many things!!!!!!!

The problem with these blessed allergies is that they can be everything and nothing - sometimes it passes and you just don't know the cause!
I find Tea Tree spray ( for dogs) is really soothing for a lot of conditions(hot spots etc) and is useful to have in your dog tool kit
Anyway I hope you get more sleep tonight

One of my dogs can not eat anything with alfalfa in it. She will scratch and lick and chew for days after one small bit.
when first starting the all natural or raw diet (I don't like the term BARF lol) I don't usually advise people to use any supplements for a while except maybe digestive enzymes or probiotics. If the dog does OK then add one supplement a week and see if there is any problem (itching, diarrhea, etc)
Hope this helps!

Feet chewing is generally a food allergy - could be an allergic reaction to soaps etc or environment - but generally food in my experience. I'd eliminate either the kelp or alfalfa for 20 days and see what happens, then eliminate the other one and see. Good luck!!

She hasn't been chewing on them for the last day and a half, as far as I've noticed. I'm leaning toward the Eating Something While Loose Theory. But, if it does recur, I will cut out the alfalfa and kelp and see if that helps.
Thanks!
