I've notice a little patch on Xena's head that seems a bit bare of fur....
She has grey eyebrows to start with, so are lighter than her face... but over the right eye it's a little bit bare. I don't think it's got particularly worse since I brought her home...but it's there nevertheless..
Any thoughts?

Hi Gary, it's a little bit difficult to tell what you're talking about from the picture you posted. Do you have one that maybe shows the difference between the two eyes for comparison? I'm assuming you mean the light tan part over the eye, but in the pic it doesn't really look like hair loss so much as lighter coloring. Many GSDs change in color or markings as they age, so I'm just wondering if perhaps that's what you're noticing?

My dog Nickie started to lose the fur above his eyes a few weeks ago. After asking for advice on the board and then taking him to my vet, we determined that he had allergies to the grass.
Some folks on the board were concerned that it was mites so the vet did a scraping of the skin around his eyes (actually repeated the test since nothing showed on the first test & again, no mites on the second test.
Vet put him on a very low dosage of prednisone for two weeks and it cleared up. Naturally, after the effects of the prednisone wore off, the hair started getting thin again around the eyes. He also has a few bare looking places between his toes.
I've tried wiping him off with baby wipes when he has been rolling in the grass. I think that has helped a little.
If you look at the link to my photos, you can kind of see in the photo labeled "Nickie-9 months" where he looks a little "moth-eaten" around his eyes.

I was going to suggest allergies as well. Allergies to grass is often a horrible thing to have to deal with because it's everywhere. When I was a kid we had a Border Collie that was allergic to fleas!
Diane, has your vet discussed treatments for the allergies other than prednisone? Steriods often work, but there can be a huge price to pay for using them. I had some bad experiences with my one of my dogs on prednisone and it's certainly made me shy away from using it again unless absolutely necessary...and even then only if it was for a short period of time.
Gary, have you noticed your dog itching that area or rubbing her face? And you said that she's had it since you brought her home with no changes? My friend has a dog who had something similar and it turned out that the dog just had a lower number of follicles than normal in that area, and apparently that area is has a lower number of follicles anyway (most places covering bony areas have less fur in general).
Have you mentioned it to you vet?

Along the line of allergies. Awhile back I posted a picture of my mother-in-laws dog who had lost a very large patch of fur near her hindquarters after a lunatic vet pumped her full of 8 different vaccines on the same day.
After a few months with no regrowth she decided to try over the counter hydrocortosine cream and it has definetely done the job. She did not consult with a vet before trying this.
I'm glad it cleared the problem up but does anyone know of any dangers/risks of using a low strength steroid like this on a dog?

Amber,
Connie mentioned a couple of antihistamines: Hydroxyzine and Chlorpheniramine which I will ask the vet about when I see him later this week. Apparently one of the side effects is drowziness. I'm also going to order some salmon oil and start him on that along with the vitamin E.

I'd get it checked by the vet, since that's a classic spot for mites.

Hi, Diane,
I went back to that thread to remind myself.
I'm still at odds with a vet who prescribes steroids as the first line of defense with a suspicion of atopy..... but I'm not a health professional.
I'd be saying something like "I would prefer to exhaust other options before resorting to Pred unless the dog is so itchy that we need it, briefly, to break a cycle."
I'm also surprised that a vet at the current stage of general knowledge about inflammation did not suggest the fish oil and vitamin E along with trials of antihistamines (which dogs react to individually, so trials are a good idea).
The two together are far more effective than either one alone.
The toe symptoms are indeed classic atopic dermatitis symptoms.
That came up in your original thread, but I think at that point he had no paw involvement.
I hope you'll post back and let us know how the dog is doing. Allergies can be very frustrating. You have my empathy 100%.
