I just started feeding raw and here is my 7-day menu which I intend to rotate weekly for the rest of my dog's life: Chicken necks, Pork liver, Ground raw beef, Chicken Gizzards with hearts, Meat and bone trimmings, Fresh water fish, Duck eggs.
What do you think of my menu?
Regarding the duck eggs, I decided it would be good 'coz it's so abundant and cheap here in the Philippines. How much do you think I should feed my 7-month old GSD in one day? Would a dozen in one day be too rich?
Right off the bat, I would say feeding only eggs all in one day is too much. They should probably be spaced out, perhaps one a day for 4-5 days of the week. Just throw it in with the other food.
Another observation: it doesn't seem you will be giving enough bone in the dog's diet. I only see it twice a week and not sure if you're going to be giving recreational bones only on one of those days but if so, those bones don't count toward bone consumption, as most rec bones can't be eaten by the dog.
Another thing to note, be extremely careful about giving recreational bones. They are hard as rocks, perhaps harder, and have the potential to crack your dog's teeth or cause an internal obstruction (sharp shards could cause damage as well).
I'll leave it to more experts to explain further re ratios, etc.
John, Cindy has a meal plan for a female and male GSD and is based on raw food. It's very good and very thorough. I'd suggest it highly. Also, I purchased the BARF Diet book from Leerburg and it was very informative and a short read, too. A ton of friends also offered their suggestions here on Leerburg. Now, I kind of do my own thing based on the info I've learned here.
I feed whole chicken quarters for .39 a lbs
chicken necks
chicken livers
beef livers
turkey necks and wings
whole chicken fryers and rock hens
pork necks
ground beef and turkey
occasional cold water fish
an occasional egg once a week or so
carrots/apples/brocoli/celery/spinach/bananas blended and slightly cooked
omega3 oils
organic kelp
I feed a duck egg when we find one at the park that has been disturbed somehow and would only rot. I think you need more bone as well. Try chicken backs as they are fairly cheap and you also get sone organ meat usually still attached. Why the pork liver? Not bashing it as we feed some pork in our diet but just wondering why not beef or chicken? I got some pork stomach for variety but it is still in the freezer for another couple days

I'm with Sandy and Mitch: I suspect that you have far too little RMB here.
The raw diet is actually based on RMBs.... that would be a pretty much daily primary item.
Yes, all eggs for a day would probably give the dog diarrhea.
What exactly is "meat and bone trimmings"? I ask because if you mean a butcher item, it may be fat and not much else. (And it might be a perfectly great pile of scraps, too.)
Am I reading this right, when I interpret it as two days a week based on organ meat? You want to aim for 5-10% of the diet being organ meat.
BTW, good for you that you have switched your dog to fresh food!
Hmmm good info from all of you. Well meat and bone trimmings are from the butcher: a kilo of it would be around 70% ground bone, sawdust if you may call it that. So I think I'll substitute the duck eggs with chicken legs and thighs so he can have more bones? Also, you think I should cut down on my planned organ meat ration?
About my choice of pork liver, well they're cheaper than chicken liver and I figured I already have too much chicken and chicken parts in my diet. Beef liver on the other hand is quite rare in the markets here...dunno why though.
About supplements, my pup has been on half a Centrum tablet, a fish body oil gel cap and a capsule of Glucosamine-Chondroitin eversince.
