Hi, I'v got a problem. My Mal has been biting himself in the torso for the last 15 min.
He does not have fleas, and is not itchy. He's got his entire mouth around his stomack
and he's biting down. Not hard, but he's still got a full bite and is putting pressue on his stomack.
He's done this a few times before, but he stopped after a few minutes. This time it's lasted longer.
The only thing I can think of is about 10 min before this started I gave him a Kong with peanut butter in it. So i'm wondering if this could be an allergy thing to PB.
Anyone have any ideas.
I got him to stop by giving him some raw beef neck bones, ummm yum

I'll lay off the PB untill I get him tested for allergies.
I was asking about the symptoms because I thought of bloat.
Good call Connie, that is what I was thinking. Or at least a gut ache that is definitely bothering him.
I would go and see the vet, as if it is bloat, it is nothing to wait on......

If it has happened before, it wouldn't be bloat, would it? It wouldn't just pass.
I seems that something is causing him pain though. Would it be possible that the high fat content of the peanut butter could be irritating his pancreas? Or maybe he is sensitive to it. Does he have more gas?

I think it can. It usually happens from overaccumulation of air, liquid, etc., in the stomach. That's gastric dilatation. But then that may or may not trigger twisting, (or "torsion" or "volvulus"). That's when the stomach first swells and then rotates, twisting between the esophagus end and the intestine end. That's what kills the dog.
So I think there can be incidents that pass without torsion. Literally.
This dog is not the usual bloat age --- he's very young. ButI would not fool around with any bloat-like symptoms, because I'm just not sure. I would call the vet and describe it, and let the vet decide.
if you do an internet search on flank sucking you will find a lot of information.
Malinois tend to be obsessive compulsive about things, so I would try to nip this behavior in the bud and make sure he has plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
