OK, I have been reading and reading every thread about the raw diet. I am very interested, but not sure I am able to make a complete switch. Storage, supply and cost issues at this time.
On Thanksgiving, for a special treat, I fed my dog raw turkey neck for breakfast, and he loved it! I saw no real change in his stool either, maybe just a tad softer.
My question is, is it OK to feed one kibble meal and one raw meal each day? Or even just add raw meals 3-4 days a week to start?
Is it better if I do this to feed raw in the morning, or at the evening meal?
If I do half & half, (or less) is just salmon oil and E all the supplementation that is needed?
I know I have read this information somewhere before, but cannot find it. So forgive me for asking again.
Yes you can do some of the meals raw and some the kibble, you just don't want to feed both in the same meal as they digest at different rates.
If the meat has adequate bone, or bone meal added, the Salmon oil and E is good, and you might also want to add some organ meat once a week. The amount of liver I feed is about 1/3 of their daily portion of meat so they don't get loose stool.
I don't think it makes any difference if you feed the raw in the morning or evening.
When I was transitioning my dogs from raw to kibble for vacation purposes, I found that when I fed the raw and kibble did make a difference - not medically, just energy-wise. Both dogs tended to be somewhat sluggish after a kibble meal. Therefore, since I work during the day, I took advantage of that and fed them kibble in the morning so they would sleep most of the day in their crates.
However, if you are home all day and can exercise your dog, but want him calmer in the evening, you might want to feed kibble at night.
I feed liver with their raw meals, but I only feed 5% of their total meal.
