With my GSD, as a puppy she was almost a solid black blanket back but now she is three years old and gradually her markings and coloring have changed to more of a saddle back. She does not shed very much but every spring I have noticed she will shed these tufts of fur just from her hind quarters.
The saddle pattern develops gradually. (Not sure if you were asking about colour or just texture of the dog's coat).
I have a saddleback dog (not a GSD, though) who was born almost entirely black with brindle only on his feet. He is now 5 months old and his brindle covers his entire forelegs and all of his lower hindlegs, and starting to show through on his thighs.
His mother is a black/brindle saddleback.
It works the same way in GSDs. I have pics if you want.
thanks for the info, im looking for info on the pattern of changes, loss of puppy
coat begining of undercoat and ect. Is there not detailed info out there some where.

Seasonally I will say that in the summer my dog's coat lightens. He stays outside 24/7. He is a GSD that is black and tan with a large saddle. The sun somewhat bleaches his coat color. He stays black but not jet black.
Ive found that my GSD's black saddle has started to grizzle a bit and now her once black has started to verge on sable. Ive heard (on this board, I think) that this can happen but I dont know if it a general rule.
