Buster does this reverse sneezing thing, I havent been able to find out anything about the condition except for a brief mention in a vaccionsis article in refernce to muscle spasms.
I havent noticed any trigger; not chemicals and not excersise.
He has done this for awhile but I desperatly wish Id kept a log of when things started, it would have helped with several things. But back on topic. Does anyone know any information about this; why? is it normal or induced? etc...

Hi Mary, My little chihuahua has gone through occasional fits of reverse sneezing her entire life. I asked my vet about this and she said its normal and doesn't hurt them. Usually caused by allergies, irritants or infection (so I blame the dust in my house). If it lasts more that a minute, I can usually stop it by just giving her a soft treat to eat. If it gets to be a big problem and happening all the time, I would take him to the vet.

This would be a good question for Cindy since a reference was made to vaccinosis. You could probably PM her with this question.
Let us all know the answer though.

My dogs have all done the "reverse sneezing" at one point or other. In fact last week my husband called me at work and said that Roxie had done it a couple of times but as he recalled it was nothing to worry about.
I did a quick Google search and came up with several sites that talked about it. It apparently is an irritation of the soft palate in the dog's mouth (caused by an allergy, a piece of food, grass, water, whatever) that has triggered the reverse sneeze. According to what I have read, it is not a problem and can usually be stopped by a soft stroking of the animal's throat. However, it should not be confused with an asthma attack which is a much more serious problem.
Just my two cents worth . . .

My Brussels Griffon has attacks. They seem to happen when she gets overly excited to see someone. I hate when it happens because her little body heaves and nothin I do seems to help.
Allergies make sence as she is allergic to dust and molds.

I'm not really sure exactly what a "reverse sneeze" means. My moms dog does thing thing, almost like a weezing, funny in and out breathing thing on occasion, would this be what you mean? Or can someone try to describe it better for me? Thanks!

My dogs have all done this on rare occasions, I did have a foster that did so often. I was also told it's normal and nothing to worry about. I have noticed that the fosters who are new to my area (they are from somewhere quite distant, usually) are the ones most susceptible to it.
Shody, it's like they stand there and snort. Sometimes people think your dog is about to throw up, but it's different. They usually stand kind of stiffly with their front feet apart and snort away. Touching their throat often stops it.

Everything above is correct. However annoying or disconcerning it may be, it's not gonna' hurt them and it's nothing to worry about. See it all the time, though mostly in small and toy breeds.

For a long time I just assumed it had to do with the bulldog in him (the type) and that it had to do with respitory issues that short muzzled dog tend towards.
still, no matter how neutral an issue it is, I really want to know the "whys" and "wherefores" of it because it doesnt seem "normal" to me. I mean what is the function of it, if there is none then it must be abnormal; in other words not good for them etc
I am not trying to be an overreactive type but lately Ive decided to investigate everything that doesnt make sense to me...bear with me while I arm myself with knowledge

Ironically I read this thread, went to let my dog in from the yard and he was reverse sneezing!!!
I too have been told it is vaccinosis related, and I don't doubt that it can be. However, I do notice that my dog does it occasionally after playing some super dusty fetch, or tearing apart a stick. Today it was just after eating a load of refrozen/sharp spring snow (with blood from the dog's venison dinner from the day before, yum!)
It is obvious to me that my dog does it on rare occassions when his pallet or throat is irritated. It is not persistant and does not last more than a few seconds.
