I have a litter of 10 puppies. Today I noticed there was a very runny stool in the puppy run...but didn't know which one did it. They were, and are, all acting fine, energetic, and eating. So I figured, well, one of them may have eaten something (like too much poop, etc).
Tonight I fed them dinner and within 5 minutes one little boy was going diarrhea...very watery. I stood and watched them all until they went...and all of the others had normal bowel movements. I separated this boy...however...they have all been around each other obviously...but I figured I need to keep an eye on him so I will know when he returns to normal and I'll know if any others start up with it.
They are on Albon, as they had coccidia (have been for 11 days. I will try to get a stool sample tomorrow to take to the vet...this last one was all watery mixed in with pine shavings.
Any advice? Should I withold his breakfast?
Could it be worms?
Thanks!
Are these pups outside? How old are they? I would not necessarily withhold breakfast, but I would definitely make sure that they pup gets enough fluids to counteract the diarrhea, dehydration will kill a small pup faster than a paprasite infestation would.
They are outside in a 6x6 wire kennel with pine shavings during the day and they are inside in my laundry room at night (it is too cool at night for them to be out). We are in California & the days have been in the 60's and 70's.
He just drank a bunch of water a few minutes ago. I'll take him out to go potty in a bit and then I'll offer him more water.
When he was about 3 1/2 weeks old, this same puppy had watery diarrhea...but then was fine after deworming. So I'm wondering if that might be it, since the others seem fine. Could he be more sensetive to worms (if he has them)?
So no on withholding food? I have some dyne I could give him.
The pups are 7 1/2 weeks old.
It could be that he is more sensitive to worms, But i would take him in ASAP at that age, its nothing to fool around with when its watery in baby pups!
What does he eat?
If it were my pup I would put him on a bland diet of overcooked rice and boiled skinless chicken for a few days.
Also worming can take several doses to effectivly clear them all, so I would look into that too with the vet.
I will call my vet in the morning & hopefully his poop will firm up enough to get a sample.
He eats Canidae All Stages and has since I weaned them. That's it...nothing added to it.
Okay...GAG...I just had to scrape some very runny poop into a plastic cup...I'm taking it to the vet office this morning...he is still acting fine and I gave him a little bit of food (didn't have any rice/chicken, but will pick some up). So, he is acting normal, just very watery stools.
Yeah, I'm thinking I may get some rice, chicken and pumpkin to help him firm up. I have people coming to look at the pups today...and have to keep him separate. I wouldn't be comfortable letting him be picked until I know he is 100% healthy.
