Loki and Fargo have been having some minor disagreements this past week, partially I think it is because Loki at 2 1/2 is fully matured now and a bit more prone to standing his ground, and well Fargo is just sort of a scrappy little thing.
So I decided it was time to Nueter Loki. I just got off the phone with the vet and was quoted over $400.00 plus extra for pain medicine, for a regular nueter, not even a laser procedure
They are usually a pretty reasonable vet, and I really like them a lot but this just seemed ridiculously high to me!
A nueter is a fairly simple procedure with the biggest risk coming from anesthesia, I cant imagine what they would charge for a spay!!!

Yes, most place though want to see him first for a full exam, and blood work if he is a new patient before doing the surgery, which is good!.... but adds on about 150 or more to the cost of the neuter.
Im tempted to use the local spay and neuter place that is really reasonable, They have a good track record and all the rescues use them.
I wouldnt use them for a Female Spay since its so much more complicated but geez its literally snip snip and two to 4 stitches for a boy!

Jennifer, have you checked with your local Humane Society? Some may have Spay/Neuter programs that would cost much less or may even offer for free on certain days of the year. Is that the spay/neuter place you were talking about?

We dont qualify for the one through the humane society...they have very strict financial guidelines and thank goodness we make too much!
There is a clinic here that only does spaying and neutering as well as rabies and worming.
It is also income based but you can make upwards of 80,000 depending on family size.

ALso, if this was a medical need or a more involved surgery I wouldn't hesistate to take him to our normal vet, and its not even a matter of not being able to afford it. It just seemed ridiculously expensive for a 2 yr old 75 lb dog.

$400 is really high.
Here in Ontario I just paid $200 to neuter a male (50 lbs) and that was the cheapest price I could find. None was $400 though.. The rescue I work for tries to have their (American) dogs neutered BEFORE they get to Canada since our prices are so high. Generally a rescue can get a low cost neuter for $50 to $80 and the job is just as good.
In fact, our prices are so much higher than in the states that we have to charge twice the adoption fee for animals that are sterilized north of the border.
So, seeing as how $400 is so much higher than even our high prices, based on what I'm told, that is very unusual in the U.S. and you should shop around (carefully - make sure it's not a "shady" place). I would say a place that the rescues use is a good choice.

good lord that is WAY too much!
i got capone's neuter, complete physical, PLUS my cats spay and physical, the bloodwork and pain meds-plus capone had an ear infection-so that medication, all for about $525.
the neuter, plus pain meds runs about $130 here. An exam is $35.
I tend to opt out of the blood work-but even that is only $45.
my vet is also one of the more expensice placed for a s/n in my area.
you can turn your dogs over to AC, have them do the neuter, and adopt him back for like 100 bucks........
(no-i haven't ever done that-but i know people who have).
actually-i went back and looked at all my files-out of ALL the vets i have used, moving around, having cats at one vet, dogs at another, and rabbits at another, etc, i have NEVER paid more that 165 for the total spay/neuter(including pain meds).
exam fee is extra.....
i am floored that a neuter would cost that much ANYWHERE.

Well I made an appt for two kitties to go to the spay and nueter clinic here on thursday
One is a stray that we feed and she turned up with a baby bump this weekend..the last thing we need around here is kittens, Fargo would have them for lunch.
It will be 30 for the male and 45 for the pregnant female.
If it all goes well Im just going to take Loki there as I asked around and people told me good things.
I do love our vet, and they arent that expensive for everything Fargo had done in january...3 different types of fecal tests, blood work, three medications, ear cleaning, nail trim and in depth exam and a parvo and distemper shot it was well under 200.
I am hesitant to take him to a new vet just for a cheaper surgery so I think I would actually feel better about using the clinic the rescues use than some random vet!
