My GSD just turned one, When is the age to start protection training? He is in advance OB training and doing quite well. also he just started barking and going nuts eveytime he see's another dog or person walking down the street, he is in my truck? is this normal. when I tell him no he stops right away. it just he never did this before should I be concerned.
You should start soon. Foundational work in bite training is a drive building exercise where advanced obedience training is not. Sometimes this can be counterproductive. I would ease off on the obedience a little until the foundational work is complete. My comments were meant to be very general because I do not know your dog or what type of training you are doing. So they may or may not apply to you.
What you are seeing is a fairly natural stage the dogs go through as they age. He is taking possesion of his "stuff" (car, house, people, etc) and guarding it. It may or may not mean that he is capable of doing protection work. You would need to get him evaluated by a competent trainer. One thing to keep in mind is that once you start you need to finish the training. It isn't like obedience where if you decide not to go through with it there is no problem.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
