with extra links, or not? Kodee wears a medium-sized prong, and with 7 links in it, it fits pretty tight (a little too tight, I think). But if I add one link, it ends up working it's way down after a few minutes. I know it should be snug and up high on the neck, and I'm wondering - should I buy a small size prong w/the littler links, and get extra links so I can get a better fit? I've also read that it's sometimes better to use the small prong on a large dog b/c it has more "bite" to it. I use the prong for control on walks, not corrections.
Also - Kodee is a coated dog, so will the small links be big enough? I think they will, but wanted opinions.
I wouldn't move to a smaller linked prong for a couple of reasons. For one, more 'bite' = more discomfort, and so more reaction. Also, I choose the link-size based on the weight and strength of my dog, and for a GSD I wouldn't feel too warm and fuzzy with a small-linked prong. The small links are designed to handle the torque of a smaller dog. I would be very concerned about collar strength in this situation, even with a backup.
Thanks, Kristel. My main concern was the fit. It seems like he's in between link sizes with a medium, if that makes sense. I didn't worry about it before, but since we've been having issues lately I've tried to think of everything I can that I might be able to improve on. One thing was the fit of the prong. But maybe you're right and I should just leave well enough alone. I haven't had any problems with it, and he doesn't have any problem whatsoever with me putting it on, so maybe it's not so tight that it bothers him.
I'll leave it as is. Thank you! (I will try to stop second-guessing myself now.)
We started with a large prong collar on Shabbado at the recommendation of the shelter we acquired her from but recently switched to a small with 2 links added. The difference is amazing. It stays where it's supposed to on her neck and we can give effective corrections, especially on walks where she is 100% under control now. We were going to get a medium but the store was sold out, and when they showed us the difference in link size between medium and large we felt the small was the way to go. The fit is perfect, whereas the large looked like a torture device on here and always slid down her neck. The small never comes undone like the large did on many occasions either.
