My 19 yr. old son just bought a pitbull puppy. I'd like to know if this breed needs to be trained differently than other breeds? I'm afraid he's already off on the wrong foot with this puppy. He bought him at 4 wks. old from a the newspaper. He said the dad was friendly, but the mom couldn't be touched (too protective of her pups). Is there some good advice for him to follow on being a good, responsible pitbull owner?
Thanks!

Do some searching on the site. You will find a lot of answers to many of your questions. But to answer your question, dog training is temperment and drive specific, doesn't matter what you call them. Read up on pack structure and buy the DVD.

Cari, I would also get him a couple of videos. Would you like suggestions?
And housetraining will be something to do right, in a couple of weeks (he has a crate, right?) and get off to a good, positive start.
But what about right now? What is needed most?

FYI - you have weeks of housetraining ahead at 4 week old so be patient. IMO it was very irresponsible for them to let a puppy go so young and more than likely illegal as well.
I would never crate a puppy this young. It's unfair at this age since they usually have very little bladder/bowel control. If it were me I'd get a kiddie pool, an X pen, and a good supply of wee wee pads for now.
To be honest I would normally tell you to return the dog but what would you be returning this dog to?

I was going to suggest the same thing. But thought about it and didn't think it would be in the best interest for the pup to go back.
Like I said, it's not impossible to work with such a young pup, but just be prepared for some possible problems down the line.
i know there's a thread or article on this site somewhere that deals with the issues of getting a pup too early, but for the life of me i can't find it.
And that search function is like rocket science to me and I can never get it to work

If Mom "couldn't be touched," then Jr. will probably be better off not picking up too much of her temperament. I have raised pups at 4 weeks, and if you have a little common sense, it's not that big of a deal. However, I had other STABLE dogs to help raise them.
Pit Bulls are active, but shouldn't be much worse than any other active breed. All the ones I've had were housebroken very easily. A large crate isn't a bad idea- make an area where he can go (use puppy pads) and then gradually make it smaller.
It can be done. There are much worse situations than this. I honestly think if the people are that stupid and the dam is that nasty, then that puppy is in the right place at 4 weeks.
Just wanted to put a positive spin on this.
That pup doesn't have a prayer if you return him.
p.s. the handsome devil in my sig pic wasn't much older than that, and he is as flawless a dog as I have ever had.

Good thing we have puppy folks on the thread!
Do you start house-training about 6 or 7 weeks?

This one sounds like a "first dog" scenario.
I'll bet you could give some good detailed suggestions. I know I can't.
Do you handle/pet a teeny one like this a lot, and talk to him?

Jenni,
I too have never had a dog at such a young age.
When you say stable dogs for the pup to engage with, do you mean other pups or adult dogs?
And if you didn't have either option, how would one go about rising and helping the pup to learn the langage of dogs?
Or do you feel it's just a matter of getting the dog through the next 5 or 6 weeks, and it all will come naturally after that?
Is that how it happens? I don't know.
If I'm not learning, I'm not paying attention.
