I have sold Shih Tzus for many years off and on. One or two litters a year (if that). This has never come up before & I don't really know what to do.
Really nice lady bought a puppy from me. Turns out she is horribly allergic so of course I took the puppy back. She told me up front she did not expect me to refund her money. She had the pup 2 weeks.
Now, she has a couple of friends that 'might' be interested in getting the puppy from me, but she just couldn't deal with that herself. So I told her sure, pass on my name & number & if they were interested I'd talk to them.
So, should I ask Friend X to pay $$ for the puppy, and refund Nice Lady whatever Friend X pays? I don't feel it's fair for me to sell the puppy twice, so to speak. Or should I offer it to Friend X free? Or if Friend X doesn't come through, and I advertise the puppy myself, should I refund Nice Lady whatever I end up getting for the puppy?
What is typical protocol here? We are talking $300 or less here, not a substantial amount. I just want to do the right thing.
if it were me, i would sell the pup to her friend, and give her at least half of the money back, if not all of it. she might not have felt comfortable asking for her money back.
that way, you don't have the issue of "oh, my friend got the dog for free, but i paid for it" or anything like that.
If the friend buys the pup, I would give the Nice Lady the money, as she may as well have given the pup to the friend, but I would most likely just give the pup for free to friend.
If you re-advertise the pup and place it that way, I would offer the Nice Lady half of the money. Good karma begets good karma. She may know of more friends in the future that she will refer to you as well…

I have a 20 day buyers remorse period (well over the 14 day buyers remorse period required by law in most places.) During that time I'll refund any money paid minus deposit and take back any live puppy in appropriate condition.
It seems like a simple solution to me. Refund the first person and charge the same amount to the next people. Each event should be a seperate transaction. If you require contracts things of this event should be covered.
From my contracts:
"Buyers has the option of a full refund of the above dog’s listed sale price minus deposit for 20 days following ownership transfer with the dog being returned in the same condition as the day transferred. After the 20 day buyer’s remorse period the dog may be returned for 50% of sale value at the seller’s discretion in any live condition."
