If a dog is barking all of a sudden they get squirted most will stop what they are doing and try to figure out where the water came from. Same with jumping and so forth. Rather than attack the predator, wolf ,lion, etc. The herd guard dog will, by barking at the predator, break up the pattern of stalk, chase, kill, thereby stopping the attack. This is from the book "DOGS" by the Copengers(spelling) old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks
