I am wondering how old a dog needs to be before he/she needs corrections. My dog is 12 mos. I have been doing motivational obedience since she was a pup, but I started correcting my male dog this early and I think it might have had a negative effect on him. I do not want to do the same with her. Am I rushing?
I have been told that you should only correct your dog when its being disobedent, and not when its not doing a command becasuse it doesn't know it yet. That being said, I guess you would have to decide it your dog is disobeying you, or just not doing something because she doesn't know it well enough yet.
Your dog is ready for corrections as long as you are absolutely certain that he knows the command and disobeys the command. Your dog is more than old enough at 12 months. Age is not the #1 factor.(Of course you don't correct the snot out of young puppies)It is not fair to correct a dog for not obeying a command he does not know. This sounds very remedial and simplistic but it does answer your question.
