I'm pretty allergic to mosquito bites (along with everything else in the natural world). I have also recently been attempting to start the garden which apparently is a encore call at any time of the day for the wee beasties to come out and feast on man flesh.
I was told once upon a time that deet is the ticket to keep mosquitos away. I've tried a couple different sprays with varying amounts of deet in them recently but nothing really seems to do the job. Today was the worst, I tried Off! 5% to which the mosquitoes giggled and thanked me for seasoning their food, and something called cutter which burned when I put it on and only lasted about 30 minutes. I would say I was bit about 40 times in about an hour.
Anyway, I was hoping for a suggestion from some of you outdoor going people for a spray, clip on thing, bug zapper, whatever that actually keeps the bugs away. I know the little buggars breed in standing water and I do my best to keep standing water from being in the yard but I cannot guarantee my neighbors are as vigilant as I am, I'm also about 150 yards from a treated pond which means it only produces about 5000 mosquitos a week in warm weather instead of 50,000. On the plus side however at least we don't have horseflies.
I have used my Cedarcide "Best Yet" on myself and had no problems with mosquitos. I also use this on my dogs as well and have never seen a single flea either.
This is what works for me.
In Minnesota, they are the State bird.
People swear by an Avon product called "skin-so-soft".
I'm told they are attracted to dark colours, like khaki pants could be better than jeans, a white shirt better than a black one.
