So I'm going to be whelping my first litter here in a couple weeks, and am wondering what you guys have up your sleeves as far as supplies for such things? I'm going to be using a plastic pool and already have blankets and towels, and an xpen around it with another blanket to keep out drafts. Wondering what to do for heat, however. Are lamps better than pads, or vice versa? Which do you prefer, and where do you get it? If I use a lamp, where could I get one and what kind of bulb do I need? Could I use a reptile lamp? What about for pads? Human heating pads or something different? Anything else thats absolutely essential?
Oh-- I am trying to get things I can go pick up in stores locally, so please no websites, thanks

In my kit...
a scale
bulb syringe
dental floss
quick stop
iodine
plastic gloves
lube
2 locking hemostats
scissors
thermometer
Clock
Trash can
chair
decent book
emergency phone with needed numbers for midwoof and vet
blank record sheets
puppy identifiers either nail polish or yarn.
camera
A giant bag of bar towels.
I don't use a heat lamp. I use this thing which has oh so many uses besides puppy warmer. http://leerburg.com/742.htm It's also less of a fire hazard and I've never had a dog chew the cord.
I also like covering the puppy pen the first couple weeks. I know with my girls it makes them a little less jittery. I would not do this with a heat lamp.

I am concerned with using that heat mat because I will be using a plastic pool, and the dam will have access to the cord when I am not there.... How likely is it she will try to "redecorate" and **** with the mat, when Im not home?

The plastic heating pad is the safest way to go. I have never had anyone chew on it and it doesn't hurt the plastic wading pool (that's what I've always used, too). I do place it on a towel in the pool, though. Makes me feel better.
In case you don't already have one, I found a good scale at the P.O. of all places. I was contemplating mail ordering one for weighing my bird eggs, the postal scale works as well and I didn't have to pay shipping.
Don't forget very clean, fresh water and maybe chicken boullion (sp?) for Mamma.
Best wishes for a great whelping!!

Pay extra for quick ship or two day delivery - it can get here as quickly as you are willing to pay for!

Call your order and ask the LB staff. (Contact info at
http://leerburg.com/order.htm#h )
http://leerburg.com/742.htm That thing is fabulous. I have it for arthritic senior, but I still am very well acquainted with its temperature and its sturdiness. That thing is so sturdy, so easy to wipe off, and so protected around the cord -- it's just a great product. (The one here has been on for a couple of years, with only three sumer months off.)

Just drill a hole in the side of the kiddie pool and it shouldn't be a redecorating issue. Trust me... you're not going to want that kiddie pool for anything but puppies after 6 weeks. I have not had one try to eat the heat pad but I coated mine well with bitter apple and gave her time with it unplugged to make sure she understood that concept.

While you are calling, get the Whelping video. It's supposed to be pretty good.
http://leerburg.com/118.htm
When the puppies go out, include the "Your Puppy - 8 wks to 8 mo" video.

Thanks for the input guys. Am I ok using sheets in the pool? I have a couple spare king size linen sheets that are easy to wash, figured I would fold them up a few times and put one in there
Should I leave it a square flat on the bottom, or make it bigger and clip it to the edges so pups cant get underneath? If so, what kinda clips can I use?
