What dog sport is best for Boxers?

I've been adopted by an awesome Boxer rescue (she's been with my family since February now, and is the first Boxer I've ever had), and I am looking for dog sport ideas to do with her.
I'm a vet tech student, and very interested in dog training in general (taking as many elective K9 training & behavior courses as I can afford!), but I'm only in my first year, and most of this is brand spanking new to me. I haven't had a dog of my own, period, since I was a kid. (And now can't believe I went so long without even one!)
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Welcome Jessica. I'm a new vet tech student myself
I would say it depends on your dog. Figure out what you like doing with your dog and what she's good at and go from there. I don't think any sport is really breed specific, except maybe the protection sports that require specific traits in a dog. But even then, I'm sure most of us here have seem the SchH Jack Russell!
Others can give better advice than me. They'll chime in soon.

Welcome!
I love boxers and had one that was trained in Personal protection.
They are great dogs.
What to do with her depends on her temperament, nerves, and drives more than her breed...

@Katie: Thank you! I love being a student! I've never enjoyed going to school so much, it's just silly!
@Willie: Thank you!
Right now we are working on strengthening basic obedience, and really working on a dependable recall with each adult family member (which so far is more a matter of training the other adults!). She loves racing around the yard crazily (I'm waiting for her to figure out she can jump over the fence, since she's already figured out how to unlatch the gate), going for jogs, playing tug and fetch, and just general doggie play. She's a happy dog, playful, relaxed and jovial most of the time, and has fantastic focus when we train.
She's unbelievably patient and tolerant of our kids, and seems to think the cats are just weirdly shaped puppies. (I've honestly never been so smitten by a dog before.)
She's got a huge food drive, only a little toy drive, so I could use some ideas on how to increase that as well. She's also a little fearful of loud thunder, fireworks, and trains. No other noises bother her.

Hello,
I'm a boxer fan myself. They're a lot of fun. As far as increasing toy drive I had an old trainer once tell us to slather a ball in peanut butter or whatever and then let them have the ball.
My late boy Rufus always loved toys and tugs and was really silly so I didn't really have to do much with toy drive for him...I tried the peanut butter on my Roxy a boxer mix and it never really worked to well for me, she's always seemed a bit too proper for any nonsense but it wouldn't hurt to try for you since she seems to like to play.

Boxers are gret dogs! There's a girl on another forum whose Boxer is doing schutzhund (in Germany). If yours has the right temperament perhaps that would be one possibility.

My guy is a boxer /pit mix. His favorite thing to do is run. Just flat out run. As fast as he can for as long as he can. So I found a great thing on the internet that attaches to my bike and I put a harness on jeter and he pulls me all over the neighborhood.
Great exercise for him and great fun for me. Give it a try.

I would start off with a solid on lead then off lead OB.
But, there are a lot of good sports out there. How good your dog does in them is relative to what you are wanting out of your dog.
The nice thing about a lot of the dog bite sports is they really incorporate a lot of things into the training. Like agility, protection, ob. ect ect. They are leaning a lot more then just a bite.

I've seen Boxers do Schutzhund. My training director recalls more than one that titled in our club through the years.
One of my own Boxers, years ago, would have been a fantastic Schutzhund prospect, but she had an extreme nose and could not scent worth a damn.
Her brother, on the other hand, was a very talented scent dog. Unfortunately, he lacked any level of exploitable prey drive.
Two dogs from the same sire and dam, too entirely different sets of skills. So, its impossible to break it down by breed- its all about the individual dog.
Most clubs, of any variety, will let you visit once or twice without demanding a commitment, to see if it interests your dog, and if he has the basic traits necessary. So go try your hand at lots of things and see what works!

Yes, they are sooo fun to work with!!! My first semester of school I worked with a gorgeous mostly-white Boxer who was deaf, and just absolutely fell in love. Another student adopted him before I could. )
Thank you all for the advice and comments! I very much enjoy working with Belle, and am so excited to see what she and I can do together.
I'm going to try that peanut butter ball trick tomorrow, and see if we can get anywhere with that. She loves peanut butter in her Kong chew toy, so that might just work. It had never occurred to me to put it on any of her other toys, though... )
I'd thought of working our way up to do a protection sport, but I don't want to be limited to just protection activities, and I wasn't sure if Boxers were "allowed" to do that. From my limited searching so far I hadn't heard of any Boxers in competitions like Schutzhund. The few people I've talked to aside from here are all about Malinois and Dobermans and German Shepherds.
Thank you all again so much! )
