Just read this on the morning news. I am saddened and appalled. There are too many of these stories lately. There was a recent thread about microchipping. It might have saved the dog's life in this case.
That is so horrible! I swear if that shelter worker could understand the pain she caused that family and for the fact that it was a great dog it would be a miracle. I am furious ! Sorry needed to vent that one out. My heart goes out to the family.
This story made me cry. What a sad ending for this dog, and for her family. Microchiping or registration/tags most likely would have saved her, but she was still euthenized accidentally/needlessly. Breaks my heart.
My worry with microchipping would be that the workers at the shelters have to look for it. Here it is a rare thing for them to have a working scanner half the time. The other half they don't have anyone who knows how to use it. I have asked workers if X dog was chipped and they looked at me like I was an alien.
Not to belittle the importance of microchips (my dog has 2!), but this sounds like it was primarily a very tragic mistake caused by a person who "wasn't following protocol". Even if this dog had been chipped, the person who pulled her out of the pen clearly didn't have her process straight - or plain mixed up the dogs - and the story may very well have turned out just the same... there was a whole lot of human error here, not entirely just a lack of ID.
VERY sad, either way, and my heart goes out to the poor soldier and his family who lost a best friend and protector.

I won't read the story because the title makes my stomach turn enough. But I just wanted to drop in that I do think microchips are lifesavers. My cat won't wear a collar for anything, and she got picked up once by animal control (which makes no sense, because none of the other neighborhood cats get picked up, but that's another story...). She's a sweet black kitty with no collar, and if she hadn't been chipped I never would have gotten her back. They called me saying they had her before I even made the call to them - I was still in the maybe-she'll-find-her-way-back or she-couldn't-have-gone-far period.
But truth be told, I never would have seen her again if it wasn't for that microchip.
The animal control in my county requires your dog to be registered with the county and to wear a valid tag, but they won't call you if your dog ends up at the pound... they just euthaunize it in 7 days, using a gas chamber!
They also do not do any adoptions, period.
It is really disturbing. I no longer register my dogs with them. They can bite my ass.
