I dont have an ex pen , i use a room with wood floors that does not have door i use a baby gate to confine the puppy there, he can see me and i can eyeball him most of the time cuz my office or living room is right next to it, however if i go upstairs or cant keep an eye on him he will scratch huge holes in the dry wall, how can i stop it or am i SOL and should get an ex pen?
I've looked at them, and unless they are held together with DARPA-spec spider's silk they look like they'd be no match for a strong, agile puppy who was motivated to get out.
Sounds like the start of a separation anxiety problem to me.
I don't know how old the pup is or how long you've had him/her, but I'd start immediately working on getting the pup to learn that he won't be with me 24/7. And that it'll be okay, I'll be back.
I've never had any problems with them, even with my large adult dogs. I've never felt like any of the dogs were in danger of getting out. I had an aggressive dog that I would take the time to install tent-stakes for in a public venue, but it was just a precaution and probably not necessary.
In my experience, if they are taught about boundaries and how to handle confinement when they are little, they tend to be much more likely to settle quietly when confined as adults. I've even just leaned a baby-gate in a doorway and had it go unchallenged (when it wasn't there for safety reasons, of course).
My ex-pen is easier to drag around with me than my dog's crate because it weighs about half as much and folds up smaller, so I take that thing with me everywhere. I've had it for many years and through many puppies and dogs. It has paid for itself several times over.
