As some of you know, we lost Konig this spring. I had posted several times here over the years about his training (all OB-although I had longed to do some protection work with him, he did not have, in my view, an appropriate temperament for bitework) and his health issues (we rescued him-baggage and all). He was a great ambassador for the breed anyway, and traveled around the world with us to three different bases.
Having had a great experience with rescue (Konig came from the Chicago pound), we'd like to do that again. I'm also interested in participating in our local Sch club (and will be asking similar questions there). Temperament is the main focus-not looking for a PPD or an extremely drivey dog. Looking for a training partner that I can make mistakes with and not feel too badly about it.
The ideal candidate would have completed some Sch or other foundation training. Older dogs are fine, and I do not intend to compete seriously. This dog would be a family companion, as well as a continued training opportunity for me. Future breeding potential is totally irrelevant; future health is important. Stability around children is paramount.
If you've got a dog in mind (or available), or know of someone who might, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Thanks-we've got an application routing to VGSR as I write this.
Didn't mean to confine the topic to rescue, however. We are also looking at young dogs, green dogs, retired brood bitches, etc., and I welcome any input from any category.

So does "Lucky", the three year old ball crazy Black and Cream.
I was thinking him too! Seems like he would be a great choice for someone that wanted to do "something" with a dog. AN even though I prefer a dark sable in a GSD, he is kinda cool looking too...
Yeah me too-he's local for us, and I'll be going to see him. He looks like a very good combination. Biscuit is a mixer too. We'll see and I will keep you all posted.

This may be out of the OP's geographic area but the Bergen Cty (Teterboro, NJ) has 2 5 month old German Shepherd pups that are an owner surrender due to a move. The listing can be found through either Pet Finder or the Animal Shelter's Web Site.
