I'd like honest input on the "fun video contests" and whether or not we should continue them or not.
None of us like not voting for someone - this is all supposed to be fun and encouraging for folks at all levels of training to get up and teach a new behavior.
It is great to win, but not as much fun when you don't, and in now way do I want anyone to get discouraged!
Question:
Would you prefer we occassionally have "events" where we post behaviors but don't vote or would you prefer to keep the contest a "voting" event?

I have not participate but I love to compete, winning or not.
But it is hard to judge when every body is doing a different thing.
Easy or harder behaviors to teach and different level or aged group.
I would go for a piont system extrat point for tough stuff, extra point for novice trainer.

What about having two different levels?
If you've titled a dog in something or won a contest before then you're bumped in the second level. People can vote on one or two folks from each level and it would give a wider range of people the chance to win.
Or once you win a contest, you sit the next one out.

I think an assigned behavior that could be objectively "judged" would be challenging and fun. Not all dogs can do all behaviors, but over time every dog might have hope to be "best" at something, and we could all participate.
We could have some trailing for Michael and others with nosey dogs, some "ferocious beast" behaviors for the Schutzhund folks, some straight obedience-e.g. "the crispest long recall". Doing this might lure the pro-trainers into the game, which would be fun for us amateurs to see.
We are all grown ups (except Willie's babies!) so I don't think winning or not matters much. It's the trying that is fun.

I agree. I think a lot of the fun is in the competition aspect. Maybe there could be 2 behaviors (or three) and you can choose which one to teach? Since it has to be a new one, there has to be selection, right? Then people could vote for the best of each behavior?

I would have to agree with what Betty said. I like the idea of working on one behavior for the group. For those that are more advanced, they won’t have to train as hard that week/month but could maybe add some really tough distractions. Something for all to aspire to.
I like that it would sort of center the discussion and get a wide range of views on that particular topic. Perhaps after a few behaviors were trained we could all video tape a routine of them (kind of like a mini trial – maybe we could call it something like Shutzy). And maybe not so much for prizes but open to critique and praise. Just think of the obedience training costs everyone would be saving – I think that’s an incredible reward in itself.
And like Betty said, we’re all adults, here to learn and have fun. Building relationships with other like-minded folks and ultimately building our relationships with our dogs. Egos and competitiveness really need take a back seat with learning and growing more the objective.

I like this idea!
For me, the competion aspect is not my main focus. I did the last one to see if I could actually train a new behavior that was a little more complex than what Chula already knows.
Anything that gets more people participating is good, IMO.

Or alternatively to the quote above, you could have 2 or 3 categories, each with a specific behavior to train:
Advanced
Novice
Beginner
Each with their own behavior...
Anything that gets more people participating is good, IMO.

Good ideas... Perhaps different levels of difficulty is the way to go. The problem I see with determining which behaviors to train - some dogs will already be skilled in those areas which would give them a huge advantage over those just learning (even in the advanced level). But as someone said - they could simply opt out of that particular contest...
We'll figure out a new way to try the next contest and then tweak it if needed as we go along! As long as folks are enjoying themselves and no one is getting discouraged - I'm happy.

Perhaps not labeling a contest.....just videos that show different ways of training the same behavior. I think that would generate a host of new paradigms for beginners like me. Sometimes I need to be more creative in thinking how to do something differently when an approach isn't working. Then a lightbulb will go off in my head...."oh yeah...placement of the reward is important, too." I seem to re-remember that one often. (;
I didn't vote but each one of them brought to light some aspect of training. However, the first video (dog rolling over) seemed to show more of a step-by-step approach of what went right and what went amiss. I liked seeing the progress in that one versus just the end results.
The videos would be great for a search feature--if you had 10 videos of teaching "Stand" for instance.
I have several Leerburg videos--just like in these, the forum videos would be good references.
